Four teenage boys have been arrested and accused of vandalizing about 500 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday.
Almost 90 percent of the graveyard was damaged, said Rabbi David Bassous, leader of Congregation Etz Ahaim.
"The cemetery is dismantled," Bassous said. "They smashed nearly every tombstone. It looks like a bomb went off."
Despite the nature of the vandalism, authorities are not characterizing it as a hate crime or as part of an organized gang.
"The facts as presently known do not indicate that the damage caused was an attempt to intimidate, target or harm the Jewish community," the prosecutor's office said. My friend Ellen is buried there.
