A Good Day of Melbourne Weather™

Dear Melbournians,

I know we have been in a drought for a while, but I can't believe so many of you have forgotten how to deal with Melbourne Weather. The number of people I heard complaining about how horrible the weather was on what I consider to be a normal wet day in Melbourne was just plain amazing.

Firstly, rain isn't just water that falls down from the sky. In a good Melbourne shower it will also be blowing sideways, and sometimes even falling up. Don't be surprised when this happens, just make sure you are prepared. Dont wear a short skirt and then be surprised when your legs get wet.

Secondly, there should be a good solid wind. This is the primary cause of the rain seeming to defy gravity, but it will also provide it's own benefits. Loose clothing will billow, umbrellas will be tested to destruction, and the ground will be slippery. Six inch heels may look awesome when you are walking into the bedroom in a baby-doll and offering yourself up as a light snack, but they are not going to be the footwear of choice in weather like this. Put aside your vanity and please wear practical footwear.

The drought has been a good thing for umbrella salespeople, but as over 95% of umbrellas were completely unable to cope with the combination of the rain and the wind, I hope people are realizing that they are completely unsuitable for a good Melbourne day of wet. If you want an umbrella for Melbourne, you want to make sure it is a medium sized dome. Too shallow and it wont help against most of the water, too large and it will be more of a sail than anything else. Also make sure it is sturdy, because it will be buffeted about, a lot.

If you don't follow these simple steps; wear warm clothing that can deal with being wet, wear good footwear that can deal with puddles and have a good grip, don't try to use an umbrella designed for keeping the sun off your head or for summer showers; then you will be fine.
