I just remembered something else about elementary school. Remember this- “If any one of you talks on the way to the lunch room, you’ll all miss recess today.” Ah, collective punishment, the teacher’s old standby. Those words always sent a shiver down my child-spine. Because I knew, I just knew, that some dumb ass was going to talk and then I’d be punished for his mistakes. And OF COURSE, OF COURSE, OF COURSE some fucking inbred dip shit would talk and ruin it for all of us.
We'd all groan and protest. "But Mrs. Smith, we didn't talk-"
It didn't matter. "You can all thank Billy for making you missing recess today." The teacher would say. And we'd all glare at him and entertain our violent little fantasies.
What a grand and brilliant mind-fuck these teachers were pulling on us. The real goal of it always succeeded- in turning us against each other. That’s the real purpose of collective punishment. Divide and conquer. A classic tactic. Those bastards. If we hadn’t been so blind, maybe we could have united and risen up against them. Oh well.
