Links to wire-service photos and photographers

Jan 08, 2007 13:10

After much delay, I've put together a list of my links to various places for photos out there. This is not a definitive list, of course; it's just the ones that I've found or been pointed toward. Some of them I use regularly, others not so much. Some are simple to use and offer a lot, others won't let you search and/or won't give you anything but thumbnails.

Rather than risk trackbacks by posting the links here, I've put them all over at del.icio.us so that you can find them all in one place and either save them yourself, or use them directly from my bookmarks. I've attempted to tag them and add notes here and there to make them as useful as possible.

Bunniewabbit's Bookmarks: the whole list.

Image Services: primarily wire-service sites covering events. Some of these will allow you to right-click-save large, watermarked images, but others will only show you the thumbnails unless you have an account.

Photographer Websites: the websites of professional photographers showing a collection of their images. Most of the ones that I've bookmarked have photographed Elijah at some point in time, and others I'm not sure why I bookmarked them... wishful thinking? Or some have Dom or Orlando or Viggo images. Some of the images are right-click-saveable, but most require more devious tactics, such as those listed in this and this tutorial.

Persisitence pays off with photographer websites. Some of them change their images fairly regularly. Some will have alternate shots that are new to us. It also pays to poke around a bit: try various categories, like "editorial," "celebrity," "portrait," and even "advertising." It's time consuming, but sometimes there's cool stuff in there.

Photographer Agencies/Representatives: These are "collections" of photographers represented by agencies. Sometimes the images used on an agency site will differ from those used on an individual photographer's website. I've tried to put the names of the photographers who have photographed Elijah in the notes, but I doubt I've remembered them all. Some of the agencies don't have photos of Elijah at all, but I've bookmarked them for future reference. There have been occasions when I've gone exploring among unfamiliar photographers and stumbled across shots of Elijah.

Same tips for agencies as for photographers, with this added suggestion: do some searching within the agencies in categories other than "photographers." Give "stylists" a try, or even "makeup" or "hair stylists." You never know what might be in there.

Gossip Sites: I've only marked two: Gawker and Splash News. Gawker is usually only text, but Splash uses photos. Elijah is almost never on Splash (which I think is actually a good thing), but you never know....

Need I remind everyone that it is unethical to take copyrighted photos, even with watermarks, and post them elsewhere? So, do so at your own risk. If you're concerned about it, consider f-locking your "finds". Even those with accounts at wire service sites are breaking terms of service by sharing them with the rest of us, so let's be careful out there!

And, as always, let me know if I've forgotten anything or if you have any questions!
