I am scared of those toilets too.

When I see people praying in public before a meal I can't stop staring. It just amazes me.

Outdoor toilets are breeding grounds for nastiness.

That was the first time I've seen outdoor prayer in quite a while. I was beginning to think that we had no Christians left in Seattle.

I see an outdoor prayer about once a month as I walk by Il Bistro on the way to the theater. Those outdoor tables seem to attract them.

My Japanese grandparents say itadakimasu before eating, and they make prayer hands and bow their heads a bit when they do. And I was taught that translated literally, it means "I will take it to my head," in other words, I will make good use of this food and not squander it. Because they're Buddhist, I always thought this was a Buddhist thing.

But then before her trip to Japan, dibble_dabble asked me about "that phrase you say before you eat," and I guess that while it may have religious roots, I believe it's now a basically secular saying.

It seems like a good motto for dieting: I will make good use of this food.

As "bless you" and "god damn it" have become secualr sayings.

Probably part of the reason I'm so interested is that ritual is so rare in American society.
