Norge- First week!

Aug 19, 2011 18:51

I write this as I am eating dessert (Nutella... plain.)  Nomz.

Well, I've had one heck of a busy week.  Last Friday was my arrival date, and it was full of hauling luggage all over Blindern (campus) and to Sogn Student Village.  After a small jaunt into Grønland I returned to my room and was asleep by 7:30.
Saturday was a day for tours, orienting ourselves in Oslo, and meeting the rest of my groupe members.  We are 12 in all:Christian, Christina, Alexandra, Alex (boy), Reed, Tong, Karolina, Kacey, Megan, Morgan, Mandy, and I.  (Gotta put down that Nutella...)  Sunday was a day to do whatever.  Most slept in.  I slept until 3, and then cleaned the entire kitchen, bathroom, and hallway.
Monday was the beginning of orientation.
Tuesday was more orientation, and our first official SUST class.  SO much fun.
Wednesday was our second SUST class.  We discussed different kinds of privelege.  Also, to get to know each other better, we are doing one on one interviews.  I've learned some surprising and interesting things about the people in my group.  And I've also surprised myself with things that I reveal.  Some of the questions that we are asked are very personal, but extremely insightful.  I think that by the end of these 1-1 I'll have a different idea of who I am, even.
Yesterday I got my placement results for my Norwegian language class.  Level 3!  (The level I needed to get my Norwegian major.)  Last night was a cook-out at Vigelandsparken and then a trip to a bar in Grønland that was really fun.
Today I had one on one meetings with Jeff Lugowe (Program Director) and Kelly McKowen (Teaching Assistant).  Both are Brown grads and very driven people.  Jeff is in his late 20s, and Kelly is two years older than I am.  After that I had more meetings with other students.

In all, I think I've already changed a little in the week since arriving.  I've come to know a few people better, I'm starting to get a better grasp of what Oslo is like, and I'm definitely excited to start regular classes next week.  My facebook has photos from this past week.  Keep looking out for the next post!
Phrase/Word of the day: Gratulerer med dagen!   Literally it's congratulations with the day.  It is used as an all purpose felicitation for things like anniversaries, holidays, and birthdays.  There are 4 SUST birthdays coming up in the next few weeks, so this phrase will be heard a lot in the days to come.  Try it out on someone you know!
