Yarg!!! this is the third attempt. This doesn't work, I'm writing it on pen on the screen.
So I just came back from spending the weekend with my brother and his family (in Saskatchewan, but that is a lament for another time) for an early Christmas. The best part was the squeal my twelve-year-old, Johnny-Depp-loving, niece made when she opened her life-sized Captain Jack Sparrow standup, it alone was worth the trip.
But last night, after two sleepless nights on the air-mattress-in-the-sky, and a five and a half hour drive home, instead of falling into bed and sleeping as I aught, I watched the 'Supernatural' (yummy!) episode I had taped, then fired up ye old DVD and watched the writers commentary for DMC.
It was more entertaining and less annoying than I had feared. But these two are definitely on something, between the slightly manic giggle of the one, and the seemingly unrelated (to what the other was saying at the moment) comments, I'm going to have to watch it again just to figure out what the hell was going on. Example, I had read another's comments that said that Norry and Will turning against each other was foreshadowing for AWE, I interpreted the same comments a one rambling on over Jack turning Norry against Will so that he could get away, and the other butting in with Jack falling into the grave as being foreshadowing for the end. It's all up to interpretation, just like the movie itself, I guess.
A few comments:
- Having read a number of the commentaries on the commentary, I was pleasantly surprised by the tone of the J/E discussion. There is rarely a comment made that doesn't include, in some form or another, "Elizabeth loves Will". Bottom line, she horny, and Jack is there, looking fine.
- They compliment all the actors.
- They talk about the Pelegostos showing that Jack doesn't always lie, and that he is not any more safe on land than he is on the ocean. Also the wide, pervasive reach of the EITC.
- They mention that Elizabeth is a part of what is vexing Jack. They also mention that the compass doesn't ever really point to Elizabeth when Jack has it. They also seem confused that people don't seem to get that the compass is used to find the chest. It is what Elizabeth wants, because Jack has told her it is needed to save Will. (Sorry boys, you are spending your time trolling the wrong message boards.)
- They seem slightly irritated and confused that they have to highlight and explain some things, like the whole "Elizabeth murders Jack to save Will" thing. And that the way Will and Elizabeth work together during the Kraken attack on the 'Pearl' highlights that they have a good relationship (again, it's all about what boards you read).
- They claim they can wank with the best of them, (made me laugh) and I think it's during the same story, one complains about the validity of a "hurricane off of Tripoli" the other laughs and points out that the complainer is the one who wrote the line (also made me laugh).
- They explain a little about why Jack is willing to abandon the 'Pearl'. It harkens back to the 'what a ship needs vs what a ship is' convo with Elizabeth on the Island in CotBP. By the time he bails, the 'Pearl' no longer represent his precious freedom, she is now doomed and represents death. Still kinda weak, but at least they made an attempt. There is also discussion that the 'Pearl' is now very important to Will and his new quest to save pop.
There still seems to be a lot of stuff not being said, likely it gives too much away for AWE. I still don't think we know the whole story on the compass, or where the cannibals fit in, just to name a few. I felt it becomes obvious that DMC was unclear in many respects if they felt the need to explain and justify as much as they did. I was also disappointed in the lack of discussion about the relationship between Jack and Will (or lack there of) and there really was way too much of dude's weird giggling, but I will likely watch it again just to see if I can catch anything I may have missed.
