I ended up actually sleeping 'til 9. Took the dog out, and realized it was one of those summer mornings that I love.
The sun had not truly shown itself yet, the air was decidedly cool and damp, and the dew still chill and wet upon the grass.
A perfect morning. It brought back memories of waiting.
Mom would drive me over to the parking lot of what used to be Tuesday's Child, where we'd meet up with Jackie and her mom. We'd all sit together, Jackie and I in the back, and our mothers standing outside the van talking.
There was one summer of endless card shuffling, as we both tried to master "the bridge." I am now really good at it, thanks to those 2 weeks. We'd play cards, too, and chat and listen to Steve Green, since my mom still listened to him back then. Jackie said he was rather cute, and I disagreed. She said he had a big nose, but was good-looking all the same. I just thought he was some Christian singer my mother listened to and couldn't comprehend being attracted to such a creature. Plus, he was old. GROSS!
The mornings were cool and damp and endlessly glorious.
Eventually, the bus would come, and we'd all pile on, and check in with the counselor, Pigs. Then there would be secret games of Poker and Gin and Gin Rummy, which we always got yelled at for, since it was technically gambling. And there would be endless rounds of the song "Girl Scout Camp," of which I officially know about seventy thousand verses.
And then, after forever, we'd arrive at Aspetuck, pile off the bus, scramble up the hill, meet up with our units and wait for the flag ceremony to begin.
Then Girl Scout camp would start in all its summer glory.
I kind of miss the simplicity of camp. And the squeals and the friendships and the crazy counselors and making fun of Hobbes (I swear to goodness that was the name of the only male counselor. The Hobbes I know now is infinitely cooler.) And in other years, it was Candlewood, and there were horses, and girls crushed on Mustang, who was actually reasonably cute, and 6 AM wake-ups via annoying recorder, and being adopted by the 3 older girls and being officially dubbed Padawan.
The toilets that they have there,
They say they're mighty fine,
But when you sit upon them,
They suck up your behind!
Oh, I don't wanna go to Girl Scout Camp!
Gee Ma, I wanna go back where the toilets flow,
Gee Ma, I wanna go hooooome!
