Okay, just a plain ebook reader it is. Then you need to start thinking of other things.
What price range do you want? This is probably going to be your deciding factor. You should keep in mind the other stuff but price and availability are main deciding factors.
Do you want wireless internet on it? This is to download books and maybe the occasional software update. Mostly the ones that do cost more but some times you can get a deal. If you don't want to have it on there, make sure you have access to a computer with internet access so you can get the books. Mine doesn't have wireless internet but I do fine with my laptop and the USB cable that came with it.
What file formats do you want to work with? Different ebook readers read different file formats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_formats That's an explanation of what file formats are out there. Don't freak at the huge list there. The ones you want to pay attention to are TXT, HTTP, PDF, EPUB, RTF and MOBI. I wouldn't worry too much about this until you either narrow your choices down or actually buy one. The only reason I bring this up is because you're not as tech savvy as me so I don't see you messing about with file conversion programs.
Do you want it to play mp3s? Some of them have features like this. Just a little something to keep in mind when you're looking for one.
I know most of this is probably making your poor non-techie head spin. Don't worry too much about it. Just look at what's out there and try to keep some of this in the back of your mind.
