So, now that I am a college graduate, the next step seems like it would be straight forward. Get a fucking job...however, this has not been as easy as I first thought it would be. All the school counselors, going all the way back to junior high school preached the idea that a college degree is very important to landing a good job. Now, that said, there are certainly exceptions to this rule, I have seen plenty of my peers enter into successful careers with little or no college education. So what sets people apart regarding their having of a job and income from those who do not? Like most everyone else out there probably already knows (and I wish I learned years ago), its all about who you know, and what you've done. Every Craigslist job posting that looks even remotely promising I apply for (which to be honest averages out to about 3-5 per week). Yet I almost never get a reply, so I'm left wondering...
Unfortunately for myself, I have done little (outside of academics) and know nobody in a field I'd want to break into. It also doesn't help that I am still unsure about what exactly I want to do. My friends in SF who do have jobs that are not in the category of "odd job" for extra cash (ie they don't want to do it for the foreseeable future) all work in education, TESOL (i think that's the right acronym) to be precise. Education as a career does not appeal to me, so my network already is proving insufficient. So I guess the question I'm asking myself is...how much fucking luck am I going to need to find a job that got decent pay (35,000k through 45,000k per year) if I A)have no experience (which is my bane with 99.99% of Craigslist postings, even the entry level positions want fucking experience, the ultimate catch-22) and B)a weak social network (in the sense of being useful for finding jobs)
Anyways, this is a rant, one that I have repeated many times before, though I believe I presented a less angry tone in this one. I will be starting my Paralegal credential program next Tuesday at SFSU's downtown campus. I know in the long run that doing this program will help me find work, but damn, what am I suppose to do in the meantime???
...end rant...
