Well, I've watched all(?) six episodes of Foolly Coolly[FLCL]. I must applaud the efforts of the writer and director. The plot is a rather complex story of a young boy and his adolescent struggle. The hero is hit by a motor scooter that's being driven by an eccentric young woman who later becomes his "housekeeper."

Now, here's where the plot gets complex. She's really "an alien" and always carries an electric guitar wherever she goes. This woman has an odd fixation for hitting objects with her guitar. It could be said that she takes the slang word for guitar (an "axe") far too literally.

The young boy was confused enough, as it was, without getting run over and then having his head wacked by her guitar. Since that event, the inside of his head is now a dimensional gate. Whenever the hero feels strong emotions, it activates, robots climb out, and they to destroy everything in sight.

In each episode, the writer (or director[?]) tries to accomplish too much and the viewers get lost. For example, a single episode has as much plot in it as: four episodes of Gundam Wing, twelve episodes of DragonballZ, or one half of a Harry Potter book.

My second critique has to do with consistency of character names. In the first episode, the hero is called by (at least) six different names. At times, the inconsistency of names makes me feel like I'm reading Dostoevsky or maybe a chapter of War and Peace . The experience can even be compared to trying to interpret a Surrealist painting.

The main redeeming thing about the series is its oddity, comedy, and complexity. Also, it has a great deal of electric guitar (Rock/Alternative) music in each episode but that could be a negative aspect for some viewers.
