I love world building and Joe does it so well. This time she created an alternative universe where mermaids (Homo pisces) exist. Danny is ægirsfólk who have more in common with the sharks, unlike the local mers, ali'i kai, who have more in common with dolphins. He made Rachel move to Hawaii, to keep her safe from his relatives in New Jersey, who took exception to her leaving Danny for a lungbreather. Things get a little complicated when he meets Steve and finds himself bonding.
