We have a functional 1997 Mazda Protégé in the the garage, which we need to be rid of rather soon.
The good:
- Runs perfectly well and will start, stop, and go on command.
- Engine and brakes and transaxle check out well.
- Has been well-maintained for its whole life.
- Suspension is healthy relatively quiet and it's a smooth ride
- Tires in good condition.
- Fuel economy on par with a small car of that sort. I could tease 25-30 MPG out of it.
- Interior creature comforts like power windows and locks, seat adjustments and the like are all working well.
The bad:
- The air conditioner has gone entirely dead, due to a seized compressor.
- The seized compressor then destroyed the belt which also fed the power steering.
- There is therefore no power steering. This isn't catastrophic but it's darned inconvenient.
The ugly:
- Some slightly damaged, faded, and repainted fascia on the bumpers, and a missing control cover here and there.
Future fixes:
- If you're desperate for AC, it will at the very least be a new compressor. These are pricy as heck at the retail level, but I didn't look into them on the used market.
- If you're not, then getting a belt from the central pulley over to the power steering pump appears to be a trivial matter. Power steering should be recoverable for <$200.
- It's been sitting in the garage for weeks and appears to have no leaks to the ground.
We'll take any sane offer that beats the benefits of donating it and taking a tax deduction.
