It's intimately tied to both our storytelling drive and our drive for parody, and tangles them and sometimes what comes out is somewhere in between.
I would sooner give up my sex drive.
In an individual, it may not be healthy, just as any human drive can be twisted. But as a drive, it's no less healthy than "that which drives us to procreate" or "that which drives us to seek food" or "that which drives us to care for children, and reacts with sympathy to any face with big eyes and small other features." It's one of the essential ways we communicate with each other; people who have no hint of it are crippled with gaps in their imagination.
I want to say it's the same drive, expressed differently, that inspires some people to work as translators; the center of it is a desire to take existing material and express it in a way that brings a new understanding. I know that what little I've done with translating has felt the same, but I'm not fluent in multiple languages.
