Title: Page 750
Harry looked over at the Whomping Willow, and sighed. He supposed it wouldn't be right to let Snape stay there, in the place he'd faced death three times and finally succumbed to it. Harry thought he might have Snape buried next to Lily's grave. He deserved something for all the sacrifices he'd made… this was the least Harry could give him. Maybe the only thing Harry could give him.
Harry approached the Willow and used a quick spell to tap the knot that quieted the branches. He climbed down into the roots, through the narrow tunnel, and into the tiny room.
The tiny, empty room.
A bloodstain on the floor was the only sign that Severus Snape had ever been here. There was no body. Harry half-sobbed, frantic; he thrashed around the aging, moldy furniture, tipping over the few broken boxes… but the room remained empty. Eventually, Harry left.
* The Night Before *
Severus wakened slowly, as from a very deep sleep, or a long illness. He felt very weak. He remembered… something about a wand? The wand! He had to stop Voldemort!
He tried to jump to his feet, but only succeeded in raising his head. Off to his side, a flurry of movement caught his eye.
Fawkes chirruped softly at him.
Severus reached a shaking hand to his neck, and felt wetness, but not the hot stickiness of blood nor the acid of venom… a pure, clean liquid that made his fingertips tingle with health.
He scowled at the bird. Fawkes nodded back.
Severus Snape closed his eyes briefly, gathering his strength, then stood up. He walked out of the Shrieking Shack while all of Hogwarts was cheering in the Great Hall.
He did not look at the castle, but pulled his cloak around himself and walked away.
