Yeah, you should look for it! Like I said, I found the latter half intensely disturbing. The sex isn't exactly graphic, but what they do/don't show you is more disturbing for that reason (de-romanticized sex). I'm not totally sold on the story, and I'm not sure if that's due to cultural expectations of movies, but regardless, I thought it was very interesting.
I'll look for "Farewell My Concubine" too! I love stories about the Cultural Revolution. And I like depressing movies in general ^^; Assuming it's the kind of depressing movie that also sends a message, and isn't just a cheap tearjerker. (Tho' I can cry at almost anything.)
Oh, I'm so jealous you saw a shadow puppet performance! Was it live (and/or in China)? The Indonesian performance I saw was a video recording of a live show my professor attended in Java. That story about the emperor and his concubine is so interesting. At least the extravagant thing he did created a beautiful tradition, unlike the horse Caligula tried to induct into the Senate XD
Onemanga is awesome~ I read so little manga anymore, but I still love it. I just read so many shojo/shonen manga when I was a kid that now all the new ones feel like repetitions of the ones I used to like... that, and I've just outgrown it ^^; So seinen manga is kind of a young adult's poison in that way.
Bokurano is fantastic (although some people say it's more depressing/melodramatic than it needs to be, and I'm ok with that). I really need to finish it. It seems a little on the preachy side to me, in some chapters more than others, but overall I think it's a great story.
