Wow, those movies sound intense but really really good. I read Wild Swans in 10th grade and LOVED it. So I feel like I should see these too. I feel like I should know more about Chinese history... I may be doing Japanese Studies, but I'm really interested in all of East Asia. I'd really like to take a Chinese history class.

Yeah, I like Asian Studies in general, and Chinese history is so rich and interesting. I want to reread Wild Swans. I read it again a few years ago, but ended up leaving off halfway through. In class in high school, we were only required to read certain chapters, but I read the whole thing anyway. It's that good. <3

Definitely see "To Live" and "The Little Seamstress." The latter is upbeat compared to "To Live" and "Xiu Xiu." "Xiu Xiu" has several sex scenes. They aren't long, and aren't overly graphic, though you see lots of body parts. They're pretty disturbing, though. Yeah, so I recommend the first two, and "Xiu Xiu" as a darker version of TLS.

I am also big fan of Chinese history and East Asia, Chinese has greatly influenced the writing systems and vocabularies of neighboring languages not related to it by origin, such as Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. It has been estimated that until the 18th century more than half of the world's printed books were Chinese.

Yeah, you should look for it! Like I said, I found the latter half intensely disturbing. The sex isn't exactly graphic, but what they do/don't show you is more disturbing for that reason (de-romanticized sex). I'm not totally sold on the story, and I'm not sure if that's due to cultural expectations of movies, but regardless, I thought it was very interesting ( ... )
