There's lots of hub-bub going on about LJ going "mod". I term it "mod" simply because I like the term.
So, we're going "mod" are we? How many times has it been now that LJ's format has changed? Looking back, it's 3... with this latest version going through many point whatever versions of it.
Now, with an upcoming 4th coming of LJ, it's going to move to this "mod" phase, and now everyone wants to complain about how change sucks and it's good as it is. I think that some of the changes they have coming up are good. While I am using the most recent layout, I have found that a couple of their user options are practically hidden and had to search the FAQ page to find out where they'd been shifted to. So, it does have it's own problems, too.
Now everyone's concerned about LJ turning into a MySpace clone. You know what makes MySpace the vacuum of intelligence of blogging "genius" it's become? Mostly because of the hype, it's on the news and the like. And by word of mouth. If you don't want fuckheads coming along to LJ, skulking around with free accounts and typing in bad AOL speech, then don't invite them into your communities, don't invite them into your friendslists. Don't appeal to them. If they do come around, they're going to find their own little niche, and who knows, maybe they'll grow?! Maybe they'll learn to type in complete sentences.
LJ has done good by us so far. There's always going to be people pushing for options that are not cool for the rest of us to see. I see it all the time in the WoW forums. It's been brought up that under 13s come to LJ and have active blog-lives. So, maybe it's not as cool as you think it is to have breastfeeding as an LJ icon. Sure, a 13- might come across it in real life, on TV, in their own house, but it's not your right to expose it to them.
And LJ is looking for feedback, they're seeing the petitions to get things changed, to update their overall statistics of who is and who isn't using their service. They're responding. I fucking like the "mod" version of it. I had some complaints about the new format, and I added suggestions that would make me happy. I've done my part.
