I totally agree. The summers I spent in college working in commercial labs (i.e. not doing research, just doing mindless samples) drove me crazy. And I never had anything to talk about with the people either. No kids for me, thanks, and I don't need to spend an entire lunch hour discussing the different options for re-paving the patio next spring.
I might be headed to a more "normal" career choice (at least in society's view), but I certainly can't take the 9-5 office jobs. The thought of doing that was absolutely horrible to me. And I still get the "Why would anyone work so many hours/so hard? Why would you give up your life for that??" Um, excuse me, this IS my life, and I love it. Just because I don't want to spend my weekends wandering the mall doesn't mean I don't have a good life thanks.
Glad to hear you loved Indiana. I think your plans sound awesome :) The one thing that's sad about going into medicine is that I don't get to travel as much as I'd like. So I look forward to hearing all the fabulous stories in the next few years. Yours will be way cooler than mine :)
