Oh, Li Li
Editing reports at my job isn't like editing in any normal sense. My boss is from China, not a native speaker. And she writes all of our reports. This makes for somehow excruciatingly repetitive, boring work (we use all other reports as templates and just add new sentences, data, etc. each time), but also mind numbingly, eye wateringly bad grammar errors. Take this sentence:
"With only 10% of current members at the Lake Houston Family YMCA would transfer to the new YMCA, the cannibalization of the new YMCA is well within the norm."
...How do I begin to turn this into English? So many times I have to just sigh and make the reports just make MORE sense, instead of making sure that they're well-written, interesting and easy to follow. One more frustration of my job. It seems petty, but this is the 3rd report I've edited this week (they're about 90 pages each) and I just want to go home.
Reminding self: Grad school. Grad school. Grad school.
It will be hard work, but will also be with intelligent people who care about that work, instead of the heaps of unstimulating, insipid work I do now with unstimulating, insipid people.
