Spoilers, obviously... (Both potential and otherwise) Do not read this unless you are up to date!
I had this theory a couple of weeks back, and I keep forgetting to post it. So I probably should, before it gets answered one way or the other...
Theory 1/ - Urahara is in some way connected to the creation of the Vizard. He knows of them and knows who they are, clearly... but that might not mean much, given his former lieutenant is one of them. But, it was Urahara who created the Hogyoku, which "breaks the divide between shinigami and hollow" or something to that effect. It gives hollows shinigami powers, so it's a safe bet it works both ways.
Admittedly, Aizen did say that Urahara had never used the orb... however... even assuming we can trust Aizen to be telling he truth about that, what's to say that he knows the truth? Urahara doesn't exactly shout his secrets from the rooftops, and I can see him lieing about activating it. I wouldn't put it past him to know Aizens' plans and be one step ahead of him the whole way. Because he's Urahara, and Urahara is cool like that.
Theory 2/ - Isshin. He clearly used to be a captain, he's on first-name terms with Urahara and has a swishy white coat. So... I've been wondering... Exactly which squad was he a captain of?
Weell, I'm thinking squad 10. Reason? Every other squad bar 4, 8, and 13, has had a captain prior to their current. And Unohana, Kyouraku and Ukitake have all been stated to be the first captains of their squads. "The Original Captains" as it were.
There's no way Hitsugaya is the same age as them, given we see him growing up with Hinamori and she was in Renji's class.
Thus, as 10th are the only other squad without a previous captain listed, by process of elimination, it's them.
Obviously these are just theories... and not terribly well constructed ones at that, so feel free to poke holes in them. :3
