i am woefully disorganized this year - as always! - but this month, oh the sparkliest of magical girl months, is the month that my journal celebrates MAGICAL GIRLS (AND WOMEN), both real and fictional!!
ELFIE, WHAT EXACTLY IS A MAGICAL GIRL? for the purposes of my month-long party, it is any person, fictional or real, who
→ is identified as a girl or woman or a lady or a princess or a queen or a fighter who is also a lady and a princess or a olympic swimmer who is also a woman or or or or
→ inspires you! makes you want to give it your all or think more or play more or party more or or or or
→ is MAGICAL, in the classic anime "mahou shoujo" sense with transformations and attack calls, or is a witch, or has been accused of being a witch, or has done things that are not literally magical but are pretty incredible nonetheless, or or or or
i think you get the idea. basically magical girl month is for celebrating all those ladies who inspire through their own brands of excellence (and often with spells). :D
BUT ELFIE, WHAT CAN I DO TO CELEBRATE MAGICAL GIRL MONTH? you might be asking yourself. i'm glad you asked!!!
→ watch your favorite magical girls in action in their tv shows/movies!
→ read up on their adventures in books!
→ draw them out, write fanfiction, post reviews and picspams and lovefests!
MY OWN INTENTION is to post every day or so with some kind of content, and to link up everything at the end of the week. seriously, if you'd like to play along at home, i would love to see what kinds of magical ladies have been an influence on your life. :D
and, to start with a classic:
gif by
i♥sailor moon SAILOR MOON. sailor moon is 100% the reason why i got into magical girls, though i'm sure my ~~inclinations ran that way in any case. she's ridiculous and lazy about school and loves to eat and play games - but she's always there for her friends, a true warrior for love and justice who in the end saves everyone. someday i will see the entire series, it will happen, but it's just such a great and feminist series. it was incredibly important to takeuchi naoko that the sailor soldiers were all women, and that she was writing this series for girls, and it shows, even in the anime that was (i believe) mostly helmed by men: girls' lives and interests are never trivialized, female friendship is possibly the number one most important thing, and there are strong women of all varieties, across the board.
basically it's perfect, okay. and i'm suddenly filled with terror because the kodansha comics website isn't listing it as a series, but supposedly there is going to be a good translation/printing in the u.s. come september? oh gosh, you guys, if that turns out to be a lie i will cry so many tears. let's all hold hands and use our sailor planet power to make it true!!!
