I bring you Peepcake.
First, lure the peeps into your kitchen with promises of a wonderful relaxing spa treatment. This one involves a gluten and banana mud-wrap, including such luxurious essentials as pure vanilla extract and eggs for enhancing and toning that sometimes dry and grainy outer peep skin.
Aaaaaahhhhh.... doesn't that feel good?
Now to activate the the banana and gluten wrap, we have to warm it up. Warming the wrap really helps draw out impurities in the peep skin, and helps tone that outer skin layer for a smoother, younger, fresher and moister appearance.
So everyone goes into the sauna. At about 300F. For half an hour, or so.
There. (Sorry for the blurry shot. The peeps moved. They get nervous when they see the inside of a big, dark box that has wire racks.)
You have to check on them after about 10 or 15 minutes to make sure they're still happy. Customer service is of primary concern in the Kitchen of the Disturbed Mind. See how that banana and gluten mud wrap is helping to draw out the impurities under their skin?
And here is where it all went tragically wrong. I had to take the kids to karate, so I powered down the sauna... and didn't open the door. And they DIED. They simply collapsed on themselves like spent marshmallows. Oh, dear. Poor peeps.
"Frank? Frank, are you okay? FRANK! TALK TO ME! PLEASE! FRANK! FRAAAAAAAAAANK!"
PostScript - This marshmallow banana cake was delicious. A wonderful turnaround from last year's chocolate egg and peep pie. The marshmallows puffed up really nicely, fell like a souffle the moment I opened the oven door, and gave just a touch of extra sweetness and moisture to entice the children into eating something that, you know, has fruit in it.
Recipe for Banana/Gluten mud wrap follows:
1/2 c oil
1-1/2 cups brown sugar
3 eggs
Beat these until smooth.
a few overripe bananas, mashed (I happened to have 6 of them, but the standard is about 3 or 4)
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
optional cinnamon and clove spices
Stir into sugar mixture.
2-1/2 cups flour.
Stir until you have a thick, pasty batter that you have to scrape into the greased baking pans. Um, I mean, into the prepared peep divans. Oven should be at 300F or 350F at first, until the peeps are just browning on top (about 30min). Then reduce the heat and allow the cakes to bake another 15min or so. You can switch off the oven without opening the door so they finish without carbonizing on the bottom or top for the last 20 minutes. (Saves electricity, if you have an electric oven.)
Best eaten warm, when the peeps are still a bit gooey.
Many thanks to
raptorgirl for inspiring me last year with her Peepinator, created by the Institute of Dubious Science. We have a tradition in our house, now. :-)
