Ellen sighed wearily has she turned off the engine of her rental car. Four days had passed since the fire at the Roadhouse and she was physically and mental exhausted after dealing with the aftermath. She had been questioned by the Fire Marshal, the Sheriff’s department, the DA and her insurance company. The Roadhouse was a complete right off and what the fire hadn’t destroyed the demolition crew had done the rest.

Several interesting facts had emerged after the local Corner had recovered the bodies from the Roadhouse. Mark Tison had his throat slit in the bathroom. The Fire Marshall had shown her a picture that had been taken on the bathroom mirror and her blood had run cold when she saw it. It was an ugly twisted sigil that had been likely painted in human blood.

Dale Evans had been shot at least five times with different caliber guns, and two of the gun shots had been kill shots and most of the Hunters had died of smoke inhalation, their bodies had been found near the front door and Ash had died in his computer room.

Ellen ignored the look of the concerned nurses has she walked down the hallway to Dean's room. She knew she looked tired with dark rings under her eyes, messy hair and the faint lingering scent of smoke that seemed to follow her regardless of how many showers she took.  Ellen took a deep breath before knocking on Dean's door. She knew that Bobby and the rest of the group were going to make her run a gauntlet of tests to prove that she was not possessed by a demon.

"Hey Ellen," Bobby said in a gruff voice, belaying the flash of relief in his eyes while several sets of suspious eyes watched her. She took a long pull of tepid Holy Water mixed with whiskey, nicked herself with a silver and steel knife and stood patiently while Pastor Jim murmured a very powerful exorcism.

“It’s good to see you Ellen,” Bobby murmured into her hair as he pulled in for a hug, giving her a clumsy kiss on her hair.

“It’s good to be among friends,” Ellen replied softly before reluctantly letting go of Bobby. She gave Caleb a quick hug and shook Pastor Jim hand before turning her attention to Richard.

“I’m Richard Moore, Sam’s future father-in-law,” Richard introduced himself has they shook hands. Ellen had a firm handshake and he could feel in the callous on her hand and knew this was not a woman to be trifled with.

“Where is Dean?” Ellen demanded sitting down next Bobby and started when Bobby took her hand in his own and gave it a gentle squeeze. She took a cup of coffee from Caleb with a grateful nod of thanks.

“CAT scan with Sam and Jesse, they should be back soon.” Pastor Jim replied in a tired voice since understandable no one had slept very well the night before.

“Those are some powerful sigils,” Ellen commented staring at the walls, the floor and the ceiling where she could see a faint outline of a Devil’s Trap. “You expect some company?”

“Demon jumped Richard a few days ago and almost killed Jesse and Dean,” Pastor Jim explained calmly fingering his rosary beads. “We literally arrived in the nick of time. Jesse was pinned to the wall and the demon was going to torch Dean’s room.”

“Jesu-damn I mean,” Ellen replied with a shudder. “How did it get in?”

“We were careless,” Caleb replied in a disgusted voice, “they changed his bed and housekeeping cleaned up Dean’s room while we were out and we didn’t make sure that Jesse and Richard were protected.”

“And we didn’t call you because you had enough on your plate with the Roadhouse,” Bobby explained before Ellen could start protesting.

Ellen nodded understandingly. “Take a look at this.” She pulled out her phone, thumbed through her photo gallery and pulled up the picture. “Every see something like that?”

The Hunters frowned as they took turns studying the image. “I’ve never seen that sigil before,” Bobby admitted in defeat, “but I don’t mess around with that type of magic too much. Where did you find it?” He emailed himself the picture before giving the phone back to Ellen.

“On the wall in the bathroom where they found Mark’s body,” Ellen explained in a calm voice. “I think it was the trigger for the spell because human blood is a powerful ingredient.”

“How did the demon get into the Roadhouse?” Caleb demanded. “I thought the Roadhouse was protected. Hell, I redid some of the wards last October.”

“It jumped Evan, somehow bypassed the wards, killed Mark and fired the Roadhouse. Ash-Ash said it sealed everyone in.” Ellen said hoarsely. “Coroner said that Evan had been shot five times, Mark had his throat slit, and everyone died of smoke inhalation. Some of the bodies have to be identified by DNA because they were so badly burnt.”

“What’s going to happen now Ellen? Are you going to rebuild?” Tommy asked in a somber voice.

“No. The thought of rebuilding were so many people died violently doesn’t sit well with me,” Ellen replied with a mental shudder. “I’m probably going to sell the land after everything is settled and move on with my life.” She gave Bobby a sly smile. “I heard that Sioux Falls might be a nice place to live.”

Whatever Bobby was going to say was lost when Sam and Jesse came into the room followed by an orderly wheeling in Dean. Ellen winced when she saw Dean; he was a huge bruise from head to toe and hooked up to several machines. She gently gave Dean a kiss on the forehead before turning her attention to Sam.

“The last time I saw you Sam, you were knee high to a grasshopper chasing Joanna around trying to play horsey with her, and look at you now, all grown up,” Ellen said giving Sam and Jesse a firm handshake.

“I wish we could have met under better circumstances,” Sam replied in a soft voice. “It sounds like Dean spent a lot of time at the Roadhouse.”

“Dean was like another son to me,” Ellen replied sadly. She knew that Dean had been on edge when he came to the Roadhouse looking for some information about a case considering their families history but Ellen had welcomed him with a shot of whisky and a rough hug.

Part Ten

Mostly out of habit, Caleb flipped his way through a copy of the Shiloh Times. It was a typical rural newspaper filled with ads for farming equipment, live stock sales, birth, wedding and funeral announcements, church sales and four pages dedicated to high school football.

“Anything interesting?” Jesse asked gingerly sitting next to him.

“Big Bob’s gun shop is having their annual clearance sale this weekend with fifteen percent of all ammo and with every purchase you can enter to win a Remington .22, and there will be facing painting for the kids,” Caleb replied and Jesse started at him while he continued reading. “Sue and John are getting married on Saturday, it’s a pot luck supper and everyone is welcomed to attend. Mrs. Mallory has a litter of kittens to give away, 4-H club is meeting on Friday afternoon, Tellers farm is looking for experienced farm hands and someone smashed all the windows at the Gaz and Go on Rural Route Five last night.”

“And life goes on,” Jesse replied tucking a locket of hair behind her ear. “How did you meet Sam and his family?”

“Ghost Miner got upset his claim was being developed into a ski resort and started killing the loggers and construction workers. I ran into them while I was looking up info on Harlan Moses and I told John that an extra pair of hands would be welcomed because there was no way I going to hand over my research to some stranger with two kids,” Caleb explained slowly thinking back to their first meeting almost twelve year ago

“Sam found the body in a half collapsed mine shaft, crawled in and salted and burned Moses remains. I offered John a job at my gun shop and they stayed until the end of the school year before taking off to track down a Chupacabra take was killing cattle and sheep in Oklahoma. I told him to leave his kids with me but he didn’t listen.” Dean had been resigned to his fate and Sam had pitched a fit when John had abruptly announced they were leaving the day after school finished.

“How old was Sam?” Jesse demanded in an alarmed voice. She knew that Sam had a lot of scars on his body that he brushed off has childhood accidents.

“Twelve because we celebrated Sam’s birthday in May,” Caleb responded flatly bracing himself for the storm.

“Are you telling me that John Winchester was dragging his kids along with him? He made an eleven year kid crawl into a mine shaft?” Richard demanded in a horrified voice and Jesse suddenly understood why Sam suffered from claustrophobia.

“John saw his kids has soldiers and used them has such,” Caleb replied in resigned voice thinking about the fights John has over the years with other Hunters about his kids, and later on, the fights between Sam and John with Dean squarely caught in the middle.  Even the most hardened Hunters thought John Winchester was nuts dragging his kids all over the country and putting them in harm’s way. “Any time we tried to talk to John and offer to take the boys off his hands, he would take his boys and disappeared.”

“I had no clue,” Jesse muttered out loud, twisting a ring on her finger in distress. “I mean Sam never, ever spoke about his family.”

“Do you blame him? You would have ran for the hills if Sam had told you truth,” Caleb replied grimly. None of ex-girlfriends bothered to stay around once they knew about the truth about the supernatural world.

“Trust me Caleb, I’m not going anywhere,” Jesse replied in an even voice. “I’m here for the long haul.”

Part 11

Doctor Jones sighed has he sat at this desk and stared reading Dean Winchester’s file. Thankfully the boy’s brain swelling had started to go down, but fluid was starting to build up both lungs, his kidney output was too low and his white blood cell count was too high. Doctor Jones yanked off his glasses and rubbed his tired eyes, he didn’t envy Sam Winchester because the boy was going to have to make some very hard decisions in the following days unless Dean Winchester’s condition started to improve.  He started to order another round of blood tests when the overhead intercom went off.

“Code Blue, room 303! Code Blue, room 303! Code Blue room 303!”

Doctor Jones quickly hurried down the hall to Dean Winchester’s room and watched the controlled chaos that followed while Sam Winchester and his extended family watched in frozen disbelief from the doorway. Bobby’s hand was on Sam’s shoulder while Pastor Jim was murmuring a prayer under his breath.

“All clear!” Doctor Ang called out and everyone stepped back has she applied the paddles to Dean’s chest and sent a powerful shock to his heart. Dean’s body arched off the bed and Doctor Ang looked at Nurse Maria Pershko expectantly.

“Still no pulse,” Nurse Pershko called out sharply.

“Okay, let's go again, 340.” Doctor Ang ordered has the defibrillator quickly recharged. “All Clear!”

“No pulse,” Nurse Pershko replied in a grim voice exchanging a look with Doctor Ang and the other nurses. Doctor Ang had seen Dean’s file a few days ago and knew that his heart had stopped on the operating table and Doctor Jones had almost made the call. She glanced at door and saw Sam’s tear filled face watching her, imploring her to do something.

“Okay, let’s go again, 360 this time.” Doctor Ang replied briskly waiting for the defibrillator to recharge. “All clear!” Dean’s body arched off the bed again and the nurse quickly checked the monitors and small smile played its way across her face.

“I have a pulse. We're back into sinus rhythm,” Nurse Pershko announced calmly and a sigh of relief went through the room. Sam tried to get into the room was kept back by a tightening grip on his shoulder. “BP is low but good.”

“Good work people,” Doctor Ang said in a weary voice suddenly drained of all of her energy has the nurses quickly cleaned up the room has Doctor Jones went into a quick conference with Doctor Ang.

“Mr. Winchester, I need you and your family to leave for a while,” Doctor Jones ordered rapidly writing on a piece of paper. “I’ll be with you has soon as I can.”
It was a somber group that made its way to family room twhere they had been practically living in the last week. Caleb disappeared and came back ten minutes later with several sandwiches, chips and coffee from the nurses room.

“What’s in the computer bag?” Tommy asked out of idol curiosity, looking at the battered bag that seen better days next to the small sofa while everyone picked at their food.

“Ash’s computer stuff,” Ellen replied has Tommy’s eyes lit up has he grabbed the bag and pulled out a tablet engraved with a Devil’s trap, several USB keys and two hard drives.

“You found Ash’s stuff?” Tommy replied in a surprised voice. “That’s good news.”

“Ash shoved everything into a fire proof safe while the Roadhouse was on fire,” Ellen said thickly thinking back to the conversation she had with Ash while the Roadhouse was burning down, “he knew it was importantly but I don’t have the passwords. He said that Dean knew them.”

“Who’s Ash?” Sam asked Bobby has Tommy frowned at the computer screen, typed in a response and glared at the screen.

“One of Dean’s friends who lived at the Roadhouse. Ash wasn’t much on hunting but the boy knew his way around a computer and he set up all kinds of programs to help out fellow Hunters and he’s the reason why the hospital isn’t bugging you for Dean’s medical insurance,” Bobby explained carefully. “Ash was setting up a Hunter’s data base to make life easier for us and I was going to lend him a bunch of my books so he could upload them.” Bobby trailed off with a regretfully.

“Damn, I can’t get in,” Tommy cursed five frustrating minutes later dumping the tablet on the table. “The whole thing is password protected and there’s not a chance in Hell I can crack Ash’s passwords.”

“Let me have a try, I’ve cracked a lot of passwords in my time,” Sam said taking the tablet off the table.

“Knock yourself out,” Tommy replied knowing that there was no way in hell Sam could hack Ash’s password but it would be a welcomed distraction right know.

There was a knock at the door and a nurse poked her head in. “Mr.Winchester? Pastor Murphy? Doctor Jones needs to see you right away please.” There was a sense of urgency in her words has Sam and Pastor Jim followed the nurse out the room.

Doctor Jones was mentally steeling himself for the conversation he was about to have with Sam Winchester and Pastor Murphy because this was the part of the job he hated the most. Pastor Jim was resigned and Sam was clearly bracing himself for bad news as they sat down.

“Mr. Winchester, Pastor Murphy, I’m sorry to tell you that Dean has taken a turn for the worst. He is going into what we call Multiple Organ Failure. His entire body is starting shut down, his heart beat is becoming erratic and Dean is developing pneumonia in his left lung...”

The rest of Doctor Jones’ words faded away has Sam stared at the doctor in shock.

“No, Dean can’t be, he can’t be...dying,” Sam whispered in denial.

“You are more than welcome to seek another opinion Mr. Winchester,” Doctor Jones said stiffly, “but I’ll be frank with you; barring a miracle, which is more Pastor Murphy’s department than mine, there is nothing we can do for your brother.”

Sam swallowed the lump in his throat a few times before speaking. “I understand what you are saying, and I’m not going to insult you by asking for a second opinion when I have the evidence in front of me. I just wish to God this never happened. I would do anything to save Dean, anything.”

Pastor Jim stiffened at the words has Sam took a minute to compose himself. “What’s going to happen now?”

“We’re going to move your brother to another room and let nature take its course,” Doctor Jones replied somewhat mollified by Sam’s apology. “Normally we would have a councillor come in and talk to you but I think that Pastor Jim is more qualified on that front."

Sam followed Pastor Jim back to the family room in a state of shock and there was a deathly silence when the two men came into the room.

“Sam?” Jesse asked gently. She had seen the exact same expression on her dad’s face when her mother had died.

“He said that Dean’s body is shutting down and he said that Dean, Dean isn’t going to, he’s not-” Sam choked out furiously wiping away his tears. “Dean is dying and there’s nothing the doctor can do.”

“How long does he have?” Bobby demanded biting his lips while the rest of the group watched in stricken silence.

“One, two days tops,” Pastor Jim replied seeing that Sam was in no condition to talk. “They’re going to be moving him in a few hours to a palliative care room and then we wait.”

And that's all I wrote folks so please don't hurt me!
I plan on finishing this by the end of June so please drop me line and encourage me.
