In honor of
oasis_pink_peng and her 'Random Memories' I have one to share too. It came back to me earlier today sitting with friends.
High School history class. I sat in the second row from the wall, second seat back. My friends David & Kelly sat in the first row on the wall next to me and one seat back. The first chair in the row on the wall was empty since it was right in front of the teachers' desk.
I was having a crappy day and in an effort to cheer me up David cracked a bad joke. And it was a bad joke. And for whatever reason, it struck just the right way. I giggled. I laughed. I couldn't stop laughing. I don't remember when David started laughing too, but at some point he asked what we were laughing about.
I paused and realized that I was laughing at nothing, absolutely nothing.
And that was hilarious.
So we sat there, as other people filed into class, laughing our heads off. This is how Kelly found us when she walked over to her seat. Her innocent inquiry as to what was so amusing just set us both to laughing harder. Soon all three of us were laughing at nothing in our little corner of the room.
And then the girl who sat in the seat in front of me arrived. She stood at the front of the row and looked at the three of us laughing like crazy people. We looked up at her and all stifled our laughter for just a moment. Under the scrutiny of an outsider, the humor of the moment started to pass. She looked quizically at us in the momentary lull and asked point blank what exactly we had done to her chair.
Nothing
I can't remember how long it took for the three of us to stop laughing. I can't remember how we convinced her that her chair was fine and untouched. I just remember that my sides hurt for the rest of the day.
