The week started off on shaky ground. Wednesday I was down and out with the same stomach bug that had been causing grief to the rest of my family earlier in the month. Since I had a big weekend planned I was a little concerned. Fortunately by the end of Thursday I was starting feeling human again. I still wasn't quite ready for a full return, but if I wasn't up to work then I wasn't up to going out and having fun later.
We had a meeting at work. The effects of the economy are taking their toll. Since the beginning of 2008 the company I work for has been taking steps to insure their long term survivability. At the tail of our meeting the boss let us know that more was coming. We had been fortunate to keep everyone in our department up to now, but Friday my neighbor was gone. They also announced pay cuts. While I'm increasingly thankful to be employed, this was all very depressing.
But then work ended. I went home, grabbed a few things, ran a few errands, and met up with friends for a weekend of fun. This was the weekend for Cryptic Confusion.
Friday night we headed over to the con hotel and took care of registration. After that I sat with RA and CR and listened to Cory Doctorow read some of his new work. It was interesting and extremely entertaining. The piece was actually set in a future Detroit-turned-museum. After that we all met at Red Robin for dinner. Then it was time for Aberrant. We played until nearly 3 in the morning. It was loads of fun, and ended on a cliffhanger.
Saturday morning was kind of a downer. I had to take a small break from the fun for winter guard practice. I was very tempted to be irresponsible and skip it, but we had some show changes to go over and I figured that things would run a little more smoothly with 2 coaches. I won't say it was a total waste of time, but it was damn close. The school had rented the gym out, so we didn't have a practice area. It also didn't help that a bunch of the kids were sulky one in particular that I am loosing all patience for.
The rest of Saturday was much better. I headed back to the con and caught an interesting panel on the exploration of the outer planets. After that I caught back up with my friends, watched another panel on the 'super-hero' genre in prose (one of the friends I was attending the con with was actually on this panel). At the panel I met the artist/author of a comic series I had read back in college. She's actually a friend of my friends. And she has a sequel to the story I had read in college.

This is what I read in college. This is what she's working on now. TBC
