A noise caused the doctor to wake from her restful slumber. Years of keeping an ear open for a patient waking or a young child crying had conditioned her brain to wake her when such an occurrence happened. She lay awake for several minutes and as the sound of someone crying reached her ears gently lifted the arm that had her pinned to the bed from across her midsection. Janet quietly slipped from under the covers and rose from the bed. She glanced down at the form of her partner while putting on her robe and couldn’t help but smile as Sam’s hand grabbed her now empty pillow, wrapped her free arm around it and pulled it close to her.
Rearranging the comforter over Sam’s long body, Janet then moved quietly towards the door to their bedroom where she paused as a strangled sob sounded from down the hallway. The doctor moved quickly towards the source of the noise, Vala’s bedroom, and soon found herself standing in front of the half open door. Janet hesitated a moment but when another cry came from inside the room she opened the door further and entered. What she saw made her heart tug with compassion; Vala was curled into a small ball with her body twitching and the sheets lay in a tangled mess around her.
Taking the few strides needed to reach the bedside, Janet laid a hand on her lover’s trembling shoulder. When that received no notice she sat on the edge of the bed and spoke in a calm tone, “Vala? Vala? Wake up, sweetheart.”
The dark haired woman failed to respond and Janet shook harder. This caused Vala to startle awake, gasping breaths coming from her lips and her tear filled eyes wide open as they frantically scanned her surroundings until she realized where she was and who had woken her.
The doctor jumped slightly as Vala let out what seemed to be a cry of relief, uncoiling and throwing her arms around the smaller woman’s waist. Pulling her lover close she buried her head in Janet’s lap and the doctor heard Vala’s muffled voice say, “I hate her so much.”
Stroking the tousled head lying in her lap, Janet asked, “Who do you hate?”
Vala sniffled and let out a heavy sigh. “Quetesh,” she said softly.
“Another memory?” asked Janet as she continued her soothing touch.
“Yes, a bad one. I wish the Tok’ra had taken away the memories along with the symbiote,” Vala replied in a frustrated tone. “The atrocities she committed while in my body are really something I never want to remember, especially while I’m trying to sleep.”
Janet chuckled softly as she reached under Vala’s chin and made her look up at her. “When we sleep the subconscious is in control, Vala. Your waking mind blocks the memories but when you sleep they come through. Think of it as the brain’s way to make you face things.”
“I’d much rather not face those things, thank you very much,” Vala replied in a flippant tone as the shock of her nightmare wore off.
“Sometimes you have to face them in order to forget them, Vala,” a voice said from the doorway.
Both women on the bed turned to see a sleepy eyed Sam standing there. “I woke up because you were gone,” she said smiling at Janet. Moving into the bedroom she walked over and took a seat on the other side of the bed. “If you really want to forget the things she did you need to face them,” she told Vala.
Sitting up from her prone position Vala wiped a hand across her tear stained face and shrugged her shoulders. “But if I can’t remember them how can I face them?”
Sam replied, “I used hypnosis to help me bring most of Jolinar’s memories to the surface. Every now and then I have a dream caused by one that didn’t come out but for the most part they don’t faze me anymore.”
“What if it doesn’t work? I’ve heard that stuff doesn’t work on some people, you know,” Vala remarked.
“Well then, we’ll just have to figure out another way to help you remember and face those memories down,” Janet responded.
Vala chewed on her lower lip as she contemplated a response to the doctor’s statement. “Could you hypnotize me?” she asked Janet in a soft voice.
The doctor smiled and reaching up grasped Vala’s chin in her slim fingers. “I’m not trained to do that, sweetie. I’m sorry, but I can find someone who can,” Janet told her lover.
The dark haired woman sighed heavily and ducked her head. “Okay, I guess that will work. When can we do this?” she asked.
“I’ll make some phone calls tomorrow and get the ball rolling,” Janet said.
“Ball rolling? What does rolling a ball have to do with this?” Vala questioned.
Sam laughed and shook her head. “It’s an expression, Vala. It means she’ll find someone to help,” explained the blonde.
“Okay then. I’m so sorry I woke the two of you up with all of this,” Vala said shyly.
Sam took Vala’s hand in her own and tugged her closer so she could wrap her in a hug. Janet watched the two hug and soon joined in on it. The three embraced for several minutes until Janet pulled away. “We will always be here if you need us, Vala, no matter the time,” said the doctor.
“Ditto, Vala,” Sam added. “Although we do need to get back to bed, we gate out early tomorrow…make that today,” she said, glancing at the clock.
Janet rose from the bed and leaning down she placed a light kiss on Vala’s lips. “See you in a few hours,” she told their lover.
She held out a hand to Sam and the blonde stood up, taking the doctor’s hand in her own. The two women were walking towards the door when the sound of Vala clearing her throat made them stop. They turned to see Vala twisting a strand of hair with one finger, a crooked smile on her face. “Do you think I could sleep with the two of you?” she asked coyly.
Janet chuckled and Sam grinned at Vala. The couple gave each other a look and then the smaller woman shook a finger at their lover while speaking, “All we are doing is sleeping. We all have to be up in a few hours and need all the sleep we can get.”
Vala looked disappointed but she nodded in response. “I’ll behave…if Sam does,” she added with a grin.
“Come on,” Sam said. “Let’s get some sleep.”
Jumping up from her bed Vala came to stand before the two women and motioned with her hand. “Well, let’s go.”
The three exited the room and as they made their way towards the couple’s bedroom Vala knew that the pair would do all they could to help her face the memories that caused her sleepless nights.
