The rays of the mid-day sun beat down their full force on the man as he worked in the earthen pit. He had already removed his vest and the black t-shirt he wore was soaked through with sweat. Pausing in his digging, he stood up and pulled off his glasses then brushed a dirty hand across his face to rid it of the perspiration rolling down his nose. Setting his glasses down, Daniel then pulled the wet shirt from his body and tossed it on top of his gear, which sat beside the pit. He picked his glasses back up, putting them on he then looked around the area.

A few hundred yards away from where Daniel worked, Jack O’Neill leaned against a tree enjoying the protection from the hot sun its canopy provided. His resting spot gave him a full view of the archeologist as he worked. He watched as the younger man pulled his shirt off and glanced around. When the archeologist looked his way the older man raised a hand up and waved.

“You could come help me,” Daniel said, raising his voice.

“You seem to be doing just fine without me. Why should I get dirty?” Jack replied in a loud voice.

“The quicker I get finished, the sooner we can leave and meet up with Sam and Teal’c,” Daniel pointed out as he picked up his canteen and took a drink.

Jack thought for a few moments and then answered, “Well, if you put it that way then I guess I can help.” He pushed himself up from the ground, grabbed his backpack and P-90 then made his way over to the pit. Looking down at Daniel he grinned and remarked, “You realize though, me helping just might make this go slower?”

Daniel shrugged his shoulders. “Four hands are better than two, as long as you don’t break anything you find it will be okay,” he replied.

“Okie dokie then,” Jack said and set his gear on the ground next to Daniel’s then lowered his body into the pit. “Where do you want me to dig?” he asked.

Daniel handed him a trowel and pointed to the right corner. “Start over there and let me know when you find something,” he told the older man then knelt back down to finish his digging.

Ten minutes into his work Daniel heard Jack muttering something. Ignoring him, the archeologist continued with his work. A few more minutes passed and several curse words were heard. “Oh, Daniel,” Jack said in a sing song voice.

Glancing over his shoulder the archeologist saw Jack holding up a rather large stone tablet. “There are more down there,” the older man said, inclining his head towards a large hole he’d dug in the corner.

“Set that one up there,” he said pointing to the edge of the dirt pit. “And keep digging,” he said, turning back to dig.

“What…no excited babble? No rushing over here to check it out?” Jack asked as he rose up and set the tablet in the soft dirt on the edge of the pit.

Not bothering to turn around Daniel replied, “I’m hot, tired and have a blister on my thumb. I’ll get excited in the air conditioning back home.”

Jack looked at the younger man oddly. “Alllrigghtie then,” he remarked and bent back down to dig out another tablet.

Two hours later found that Jack had joined Daniel in being shirtless and there was a line of tablets stacked along the edge of the pit. Standing up, Jack lay another tablet down and dusted his hands off. “That’s the last one. Now what?” he asked, twisting at the waist trying to loosen up the tired muscles in his back.

Daniel stood up and replied, “I guess we’ll stop now.”

“What did you find?” Jack asked as he climbed out of the pit.

“A few pottery shards, that’s all,” the younger man replied, taking the hand Jack held out to him.

He pulled Daniel out of the pit and clapped a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. I guess I just got lucky,” Jack told him.

Daniel looked at him, trying hard not to smile, he replied, “No, I knew they were there.”

A shocked look appeared on the colonel’s face. “You knew they were there?” he said.

Daniel nodded. “I told you I had a blister on my thumb. By the time I dug all of those out it would have busted and I’d be bleeding by now,” he returned.

“You used me,” Jack said.

“Well, you weren’t doing anything,” Daniel commented as he used a bandana to wipe sweat and dirt from his arms.

“You tricked me,” the older man said in a hurt tone.

Shrugging his shoulders Daniel bent down to pick up his discarded shirt. “No, I just omitted some information,” he said and pulled the shirt over his head.

Grumbling under his breath Jack grabbed his shirt from where he’d tossed it and shook it at Daniel. “You realize this means war,” he told the younger man. “I have to get you back for this.”

Daniel picked up his pack and shouldering it began walking away. Glancing back over his shoulder he remarked, “Bring it on.”

Jack couldn’t believe his ears. Grabbing his own pack he trotted after the archeologist. “Hey, what about the tablets; I did all that digging and we’re just leaving them here?” he asked.

“Another team will be here tomorrow. They’ll bring them back,” Daniel replied and continued walking.

Jack stopped in his tracks and watched the distance grow between him and Daniel. With a sly grin he said aloud, “Oh yeah, I’m so getting you back for this.”Shouldering his pack he followed after the younger man, his thoughts centered on what exactly he could do to get back at the archeologist.
