It was warm and toasty under the blankets, Sam’s eyes barely opened as she glanced at the clock…four am…it read. Closing her eyes again she rolled over and snuggled up against the smaller body occupying the bed with her. A mumbled phrase reached her ears and she wrapped an arm around Janet’s waist, tugging the doctor closer to her taller frame.

It was Christmas day and the pair was looking forward to celebrating it with the newest addition to their home, Cassie. But right now the warmth generated by their bodies was all the two women were thinking about. In her sleep fogged state, Sam thought she heard the thud of footfalls enter their room but the sound stopped and she started to drift back to sleep.

Cassie stood quietly beside the bed and watched her mothers sleep. Uncle Jack had told her that today was a day she was allowed to wake them early. He had explained that all children from this world did it on this one day every year and had even told her how to wake them. Taking a deep breath the small girl slowly walked to the end of the bed and climbed up on it. Looking down at the couple she grinned and began jumping up and down on the bed.

“Wake up! Wake Up! Merry Christmas!” the young girl yelled at the top of her lungs.

Both women jumped up from their sleep, with startled and confused looks on their faces. “What the…” Sam muttered and Janet mumbled something under her breath as well when she glanced at the clock beside the bed. Wiping a hand over her face Sam motioned for the child to stop jumping on the bed. Cassie stopped and stood above them, looking down with a grin on her face.

“Cassie, do you realize what time it is?” Janet asked her new daughter a tad grumpily as she fought a yawn.

“It’s Christmas,” the girl said. “Uncle Jack told me it was okay to wake you and then we could unwrap the gifts under the tree.”

Janet shook her head and rubbed a hand over her face trying to wake up. “Oh he is in so much trouble. Just wait until I see him this afternoon,” she muttered.

“Can we go downstairs now? Please?” Cassie asked in a pleading tone.

Glancing over at the doctor Sam smiled a sleepy smile and placed a hand on her shoulder, rubbing gently she said, “Why don’t you get some more sleep and I’ll take her downstairs.”

“No, if I go back to sleep then I’ll miss her opening her gifts,” Janet told her.

Cassie watched her mothers as they talked and couldn’t wait for them to decide. She jumped off the bed and ran to the door. “I’ll wait downstairs,” she told them.

“Cassandra Fraiser, you wait right there,” Janet said in a stern tone.

Cassie stopped in mid step and turned back to face the bed. She bounced in place and grumbled, “Hurry up.”

Chuckling softly at the girl’s impatience, Sam threw back the covers and got out of bed. “I’m coming, Cass,” she told the girl. Pulling on her robe she looked down at Janet who still sat in the bed. “I’ll put the coffee on and we’ll wait for you to come down before opening anything,” she told the doctor and leaned down to place a kiss on the top of Janet’s head.

Nodding her head, Janet said, ”Thank you.” She watched as Sam walked towards the doorway where Cassie waited and then they disappeared together.

Flopping back in the bed the doctor stared up at the ceiling, she sighed and mumbled, “Thank goodness this only comes once a year.” She tossed the covers back and rolled out of the bed, grabbing her robe from the nearby chair she stood up then put it on. Walking towards the door she couldn’t help but grin evilly, she was going to have to think of something particularly nasty to get back at Jack for this early morning wake-up. Never mind that it was Christmas, paybacks were fun. Walking out the bedroom door she made her way downstairs to watch Cassie open her gifts.
