geonncannon...I asked him a while back if I could take a couple of his original characters out for a spin...this is the product of that...happy Late B-day and merry Christmas G!
Ribbons of yellow, pink and blue stretched across the dusky Oklahoma skyline as the sun lowered in the west. The sounds of crickets chirping hadn’t begun yet but, the blonde woman kneeling to start a campfire knew that as soon as the light disappeared the little insects would start their loud chorus; along with the myriad of other noises as the creatures living on the flat plains started their night.
She surveyed the small campsite, not much really, just a few blankets thrown under the wagon containing all of her’s and her companion’s possessions and the campfire she was building. Striking the flint in her hands until it sparked, she bent over closer and blew on the spark that shot off of the mineral, landing on the pile of fluffy tinder. A small flame sprang up and she quickly placed a handful of small dry twigs on top, fanning gently with her hand until they also caught fire. Once satisfied that the flame wouldn’t die, she placed several split pieces of wood onto the flame and watched as they began smoking then caught, too. Dusting her hands off the blonde stood up and walked over to the wagon to dig around for her cooking gear.
Before she could find all of the gear she heard the faint jingle of harness and looked over her shoulder to see her companion approaching. Held in her hands a lead rope attached to a large brown horse. “Where did you put the frying pan this morning, Rose,” the blonde asked.
Walking around to the opposite side the shorter, auburn haired woman tied the horse’s lead rope to a hook on the wagon. She climbed up on the spokes of the wagon wheel then leaned over the edge, pushing aside a few things and finding the asked for object. “If it was a snake it would’ve bit you, Ada,” she joked, handing the cast iron pan to the blonde.
Pushing her glasses up with a knuckle Ada chuckled. “I hadn’t made it that far yet,” she informed the other woman.
Rose shook her head and reached for the Zeke’s feed bag. “I’ll get this big brute settled for the night while you start supper. If you want, I’ll make the biscuits,” she told the blonde.
“Sounds good to me; they’ll go along just fine with the fried rabbit I’m fixing,” Ada replied.
“I still can’t believe you hit that while we were moving,” Rose remarked as she poured some oats into the feed bag and climbed down from the wheel.
“Well, my aim is pretty good with that thing,” Ada said with a nod towards the wagon’s bench seat, where a slingshot lay.
“Better you than me, sweetie,” the shorter woman mumbled as she slipped the feed bag over Zeke’s nose.
Ada heard the remark as she turned away from the wagon but didn’t comment on it. They may have buried everything associated with Black Jack after they left Paradise but she knew Rose still let everything that happened weigh heavy on her mind. Hence her newfound skill with the slingshot; she didn’t want the smaller woman picking up a gun ever again, even if it was just to procure food for them. Ada’s goal was to help Rose forget her past and start over anew.
Kneeling down next to the campfire Ada set a few more pieces of wood on the fire and glanced over her shoulder before she began cutting up the rabbit she’d killed earlier that day. Rose was brushing Zeke’s coat as he ate, Ada could see her lips moving and knew the smaller woman was talking to the horse. Smiling, she turned back to the task of preparing their supper. Soon she was so focused on the task she didn’t hear the soft footsteps approach and jumped slightly when Rose laid a hand on her shoulder.
“Easy now,” Rose told her. “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“It’s okay. I guess I was just concentrating too hard on this,” Ada said, her cheeks turning slightly red.
“That’s one of the things I love about you,” Rose said softly, moving her hand from the blonde’s shoulder to cup her cheek.
“What, my ability to focus?” Ada asked as she locked blue eyes with brown.
“No, that you turn bright red when I compliment you,” the auburn haired woman remarked and stroked Ada’s cheek with her thumb.
Ada turned her head just enough to kiss the inside of Rose’s wrist and smiled up at her. “And as long as you keep complimenting me, I’ll keep turning red,” she said with a grin.
Rose bent down until her lips hovered over Ada’s and remarked, “Well in that case, you better get ready to do that for a very long time.” And she covered the blonde’s lips with her own. They kissed until both had to stop for air and Rose stood up. “Now, what did you do with the flour? I have biscuits to make,” she said with a grin.
Ada laughed and swatted the shorter woman on the leg. “It’s still in the wagon,” she told her.
Rose blew a raspberry at the blonde and walked towards the wagon. She returned with the flour and then the two women went about their separate tasks as they made dinner together. Once it was complete and they had eaten, Rose carried the dirty plates and cookware to the nearby stream to clean while Ada tidied up around the campfire. When the shorter woman returned she found the blonde leaning against one of their wagon’s wheels, strumming a few notes on her banjo.
Taking a seat next to her Rose listened closely to the chords. “I’ve never heard that before. What is it?” she asked.
Continuing to finger the strings, Ada looked up and smiled. “It’s something I’m composing. I’m just getting the melody worked out right now though and I haven’t decided if there will be words,” she told Rose.
With a tilt of her head the auburn haired woman smiled at her new lover. “You’re pretty amazing, my dear,” she said. “I’m so lucky to have met you.”
“Never thought bumping into you on a dark road would change my life so much, Rose,” Ada replied and flashed a smile.
“But for better or for worse?” Rose asked in a worried soft tone.
Ada set the banjo off to the side and wrapped her free arms around the auburn haired woman now. She held Rose tight and placed a kiss on the head tucked under her chin then said softly, “Absolutely for the best, Rose. If not for you I’d still be trapped in my shell. Not here with you, looking to start a new life together.”
Rose tried to stop the tears but they broke loose from the corners of her eyes. She sniffled and raised a hand to wipe her face. Her voice choked with emotion the auburn haired woman wrapped her arms around the blonde’s waist and squeezed tightly.
“I love you, Ada,” the smaller woman said, her voice muffled by the taller woman’s shoulder.
“I love you, too, Rose. Now there’s no need for tears, sweetheart of mine,” Ada murmured into the hair tucked under her chin.
Both women held onto each other for a few more minutes and then slowly separated with Rose wiping away tear marks from her cheeks, while Ada fumbled for a handkerchief from her pocket. She succeeded in finding it finally and held it out to Rose who was now finished wiping her cheeks. The two stared at the piece of white material held in Ada’s outstretched hand and then both laughed out loud.
They laughter trailed off and the two women gave each other loving looks then without another word they rose from the ground to begin readying their camp for the night. Ada made sure the campfire was well stoked for the night and spread out their blankets, close to the wagon, not under since the sky was clear tonight. Rose made sure Zeke was securely hobbled along with having plenty of water and grazing room for the night. Once their nightly tasks were finished the two stretched out on the blankets with Rose resting her head on Ada’s shoulder as they gazed up at the star filled sky.
“Have you thought about where we’re going from here?” Ada asked finally.
“Someplace where you can grow flowers, lots of flowers,” Rose replied.
Ada chuckled quietly and asked, “What about you? What would you do while I grew flowers?”
Rose thought hard for a few seconds and then replied, “I’d help you, of course.”
Rising up on her elbows, Ada glanced down at the woman lying beside her. “You don’t have a clue as to where we’ll go or what we’ll do, do you?”
Smiling up at the blonde Rose answered, “No, not really but as long as we’re together, I don’t care.”
Gazing down at the smiling woman, Ada flashed one of her own and then leaned down to kiss her lover’s lips. She broke the kiss after a few minutes and lay back down beside Rose. The smaller woman leaned up on one elbow and watched her blonde lover as she lay staring at the sky with a wide smile on her face. “Why the smile?” she asked finally.
“Because you said as long as we’re together it didn’t matter where we went or what we did,” Ada replied and continued. “That’s what I believe and I’m so happy you think the same way.”
Rose leaned over and returned the kiss. When she pulled away from the blonde there was still a smile on her face and Rose laughed, she was looking forward to spending the rest of her life with this woman, wherever they ended up.
I do not own the characters of Ada and Rose...they are Geonn's...they did follow me home but I had to send them back...*pout*
