Pausing on her way up the stairs, the doctor smiled as the sounds of two excited voices carried up from the living room. Sam and Cassie were engrossed in trying to beat the new game the blonde Captain had bought for the young girl. Continuing on up the stairs with her basket of clean laundry, Janet stopped at Cassie’s room and laid the folded clothes on the bed for the girl to put up later. Exiting, she walked a few steps down the hallway to her bedroom where she began putting away her own clean items. She stopped for a second, staring at the small pile of clothing left in the basket and with a sigh went to the dresser, pulling open one of the drawers to place Sam’s clothes in it. Closing the drawer, she leaned against the dresser with her arms crossed and her bottom lip gripped between her teeth.
“I wonder if she would consider…” the doctor mused aloud but was interrupted by a voice.
“Consider what?”
Janet jumped at the sound of the voice and looked up to find Sam leaning against the doorjamb. “You startled me, Sam. Taking a break from video games already?” Janet asked.
“She learns quick, already killed me three times,” Sam said with a small grin. “What were you thinking out loud about?” the blonde asked, coming into the room and sitting on the bed in front of the smaller woman.
The small doctor pursed her lips in thought for a few seconds and then said quickly, “Would you move in with me - I mean us?”
Sam was taken back by the question and wide-eyed she replied, “Really?”
“Yes, really; you spend the majority of your down time here with us and I know Cassie would love to have you around more,” Janet told the blonde as she moved to sit next to her on the bed.
Not answering the question yet Sam spoke. “So it would just be because you want me around for Cassie?” she asked.
The doctor shook her head quickly and replied, “No, oh no, not the only reason. I kind of like having you around, too,” Janet said as she blushed and a smile blossomed across her face.
“Only kind of?” asked Sam with a crooked grin as she teased the doctor.
“Okay, more than kind of. I know we have only been seeing each other for less than a year but I’ve fallen hard for you, Samantha,” Janet told her in a serious tone.
Sam sat up a little straighter and smiled, her cheeks pierced by dimples as the smile grew broader. “I was hoping you felt that way because I do, too. But do you think me moving in is really a good idea, what with our careers and all?” she asked in a rush of words.
With a tilt of her head Janet thought for a few seconds and then replied, “Well, the guys already know about us, thanks to someone not being able to curtail her looks, and because of one sneaky child enlisting their aid. Also, I don’t think General Hammond minds us being together as long as his goddaughter is happy.”
As her cheeks turned red with a blush, Sam ducked her head which made Janet reach a hand out to tug the blonde’s head back up to level. “As for the Air Force, we just won’t tell them anything, “the doctor said, lips twisted in a wry smirk as she continued, “But I don’t care what anyone else thinks, Samantha Carter. I want you in my life full time and I know Cassie does as well,” Janet remarked as she gazed into blue eyes growing misty.
“Are you really sure you could deal with me being around here full time? I mean, are you sure you can put up with what comes with me? I keep strange hours, at times I tend to bring home my work and I have a cat. You’re allergic to cats, Janet,” the blonde captain said softly as she took the hand grasping her chin and held it in her own.
Janet squeezed the hand holding hers’ and replied, “I’m used to strange hours, we can fix up the garage for you to fiddle around with your gadgets and there is medication I can take for my allergies, sweetie. Stop trying to come up with excuses.”
Sam reached her free hand up to wipe away an escaping tear, sniffled slightly then took a deep breath and replied, “Okay, I’ll move in.”
A loud whoop came from the hallway and both women turned to see Cassie standing in the doorway. The young girl had a smile stretched from ear to ear and with another yell ran into the bedroom, jumping onto the bed to land between the two women. “Are you really going to live with us?” she asked Sam.
“Yeah, kiddo, I am,” Sam told her as she ruffled the child’s hair.
Cassie grinned and tackled Sam in a hug, knocking the woman off the bed and the two proceeded to wrestle around on the floor. Janet laughed loudly at their antics and, still chuckling, remarked, “As this is a happy occasion, I’ll refrain from scolding you about eavesdropping, young lady.”
The girl grinned up at her Mom from her position under Sam’s arm. “I was coming to find her so she could play the game,” she informed the doctor. “I’m sorry I overheard the two of you but this is so cool!” she exclaimed. Turning her head to look up at Sam she grinned and asked, ”Does this mean I get to call you mom, too?”
Sam smiled so big that Janet thought the dimples in her cheeks would become permanent and she glanced at the doctor who nodded. “Yeah, I think that would be nice, Cassie,” she told the girl.
The young girl’s grin widened into a smile and then she said, “So, when can we go get your stuff?”
The two grown-ups exchanged looks and Sam said, “I guess now, if that’s okay with your other mom.”
Cassie watched as Janet nodded in agreement and squirming her way out of Sam’s grip, jumped up from the floor and began tugging on Sam to rise. “Well, come on, let’s go, we have moving to do!” the excited child ordered.
The blonde rose onto her knees and smiled at Janet. “Thank you,” she said as Cassie continued to pull on her arm and letting the child win her tug of war, Sam let her steer her towards the door. They disappeared out the bedroom but soon Sam reappeared and with a shy smile she said, “I love you; you know that right?”
Janet returned the smile and replied, “I know.”
Sam’s body jerked out of the opening and the doctor heard their daughter’s voice, “Come on, we have things to do.”
“Would you hold on a second, Cass,” Sam began and Janet made a motion with her hands for the blonde to follow the child.
Sam grinned, blew the doctor a kiss and disappeared from the doorway again, leaving Janet to stare after her. “Welcome to the family, Samantha,” she said softly and rose from the bed to follow the pair downstairs.
