Sam wandered back into the infirmary; after facing a battery of tests both mental and physical her now young body was growing tired and all she wanted was to climb into her own bed then fall asleep, preferably with one beautiful doctor wrapped in her arms. She shuffled over to a nearby bed and plopping down on it with a heavy sigh waited for Janet to appear.

Unbeknownst to the blonde, the doctor stood watching her from the shadows of the hallway leading to her office. Janet watched as Sam pulled her knees up, rested her head on them and began rocking back and forth on the hospital bed. The doctor smiled as she watched Sam run a hand through her hair and then tried to hide a yawn by running the same hand over her face.

Standing up a little taller Janet made her way into the infirmary and walked up to her partner. “Well, the results are in from your tests…” she began to say.

“And they tell you nothing different than what I told you…same old brain but younger body,” Sam grumbled out interrupting Janet’s sentence.

Janet reached a hand out laying it on Sam’s shoulder, with a little squeeze she replied, “I believed you, sweetie but we had to make sure…you know, standard procedure and all.”

“I know…I know; it’s just tiring that’s all. When can we go home?” Sam asked the doctor.

“I have to finish writing up the reports on all of your test results and then we can go,” Janet replied. “Why don’t you work on that mission report for the General while I finish mine.”

“Already did it and sent it to him,” Sam told her trying to stifle a yawn. When she saw the confused look Janet gave her she added. “I did it while I was doing this stupid test Mackenzie made me take to judge my mental health,” she made air quotes around the last part and then sighed.

“Okay then, if you want to get your things together I’ll be finished in about twenty minutes. You can meet me at the van or come back here and we’ll head home,” Janet told her.

“The van? Janet, I came to the base yesterday on the Indian,” Sam said quickly. The now younger woman perked up some as she explained, “I have to take it home or else Cam will go for another joyride like he did last time I left it on base.”

“How do you know that and do you think riding the motorcycle home is a good idea right now?” asked the doctor.

“I know because Teal’c told me about it and I can handle the bike; I was this size when I first started riding it, Janet,” Sam said, her voice taking on a determined tone; “I promise to follow you home.”

“But the team is going back to the planet, you don‘t have to worry…” Janet’s voice trailed off as she caught the look Sam was giving her. The blonde’s bottom lip was quivering and the doctor swore she saw tears glistening in the blue eyes. Throwing her hands up in the air Janet said, “Fine, but just so you know that will not work on me every time Samantha.”

Smiling broadly Sam jumped from the gurney and engulfed her partner in a hug. She laid a smacking kiss on the doctor’s cheek and replied, “I’ll try to remember that, sweetheart. I’ll meet you in the motor pool in twenty.” And before Janet could respond the now younger Sam Carter practically bounced out of the infirmary.

Janet stood with her mouth slightly agape as she watched Sam leave. Snapping her jaw shut she shrugged her shoulders and sighed. “Why do I think this is a bad idea?” she wondered aloud and moved towards her office to finish her reports.

***********

Thirty minutes later the elevator doors opened and the doctor strolled out into the broad expanse of the motor pool where the base personnel parked their vehicles. Digging in her purse for the keys as she approached her van she failed to notice the figure leaning against the side of the vehicle until it spoke. “You’re late,” Sam remarked.

Janet jumped slightly at the sound of her partner’s younger tone. “Don’t do that, you brat,” she told the teenaged Sam with a wry smile. Eying the blonde’s form she commented, “I see you found some clothes that fit.”

Tugging on the collar of the jacket she now wore Sam replied with a grin, “I raided your locker. But I had to go to supply for new boots, your feet are still smaller than mine.”

Janet shook her head. “Maybe we can find you some things at home. I think there are a few boxes of Cassie’s clothes in the attic that she refused to part with,” commented the doctor, refusing to let Sam goad her into a round of small jokes. “Where’s the bike?” she asked unlocking the driver’s door.

“Three spaces down. Give a minute and I’ll follow you out,” said the blonde.

“You’ll not only follow me off base but all the way home, Sam. Remember you don’t have a license that matches now,” Janet pointed out.

Sam ducked her head and shrugged her shoulders. “I know, I swear I’ll be right behind you the whole way, Janet,” she said meekly and then with a goofy grin held up three fingers and added, ”Scout’s Honor.”

“You’ve been around Vala way too long, my dear,” Janet said trying not to laugh. “Hurry up and get the bike, it’s late and I have to be back here way too early,” the doctor told the blonde.

With a little salute Sam jogged away to get the Indian. Janet climbed into the van and waited until she heard the sound of the motorcycle’s engine roar to life before she closed her door and started the vehicle. When Sam pulled into view looking dwarfed by the large motorcycle Janet rolled down her window and called out over the engine noise, “Are you sure you can handle that?” The figure made a forward waving motion and gave the thumbs up sign. Shaking her head Janet rolled her window up and eased out of the parking spot towards the exit with the motorcycle not far behind.

Leaving the base Janet kept a watchful eye on the motorcycle in her rear view mirror. Sure Sam had agreed to follow her home but she didn’t put it past the now younger woman to pull a fast one; Sam Carter plus motorcycles usually equaled showing off. They were a couple of blocks from home when Janet caught a red light and before she knew it Sam pulled along side of the van, gave the doctor a little wave then cut in front of her and turned to the right speeding off into the darkness.

Slamming her hand down on the steering wheel Janet exclaimed, “Damn it, Samantha!” Making sure there was no traffic coming, the doctor slammed her foot down on the accelerator and the tires squealed as she turned to follow the fading taillights. Cursing a blue streak at her reckless partner Janet kept an eye out for any sign of the motorcycle. After driving down the street for ten minutes with no sighting of the machine and its rider she pulled over, stopping next to the curb. A myriad jumble of things that could happen to Sam ran through her mind as she sat in the idling van, each one’s outcome worse than the other.

Finally she gripped the steering wheel and muttered, “Samantha Carter, you’d better be at the house when I get there, if not…” her sentence trailed off into a growl as she pulled the van back into the street and made her way to their house.

The big motorcycle raced down the dark suburban street; its rider smiling widely behind the helmet’s faceplate as she increased her speed. ‘I know she’s going to kill me when I get home but I couldn’t resist,’ she thought switching gears as she slowed down to turn onto a side street. ‘There’s no traffic so a little spin around the neighborhood won’t hurt,’ she concluded.

Pushing the faceplate of the helmet up Sam reveled in the sensation of the cool night air blowing in her face as she eased back on the throttle to let the Indian coast through the sleeping neighborhood. ‘No sense in waking anyone up at this late hour,’ she mused silently. Letting the bike’s momentum carry it around another corner she started to apply the throttle when a loud siren pierced the air and blue lights appeared out of the darkness behind her.

“Crap…crap…crap,” she muttered glancing at her side mirror to see the motorcycle patrolman behind her. Pulling over to the curb she shut the Indian’s engine off and tugged the helmet from her head.

The tall uniformed officer walked up beside the motorcycle and Sam breathed a relieved breath. ‘Oh good, it’s Will. Maybe I can talk my way out of this,’ she thought when realizing the motorcycle cop was their neighbor from across the street. Shaggy blonde hair, an innocent smile and camouflage fatigues greeted his stern look. He began to say something but she spoke before he could.

“Hello, Wi…umm Officer, did I do something wrong?” she asked.

“Would you mind explaining just why you’re on that particular motorcycle at this time of night?” the man asked.

‘Okay, let’s see if I can pour on the charm,’ Sam thought and launched into a tall tale for the policeman.

Meanwhile on the other side of the neighborhood Janet pulled into the driveway and opened the garage with the remote. Not finding the Indian in its usual resting spot she let out another string of curses and pulled the van into its parking spot. Exiting from the vehicle she slammed the door shut and stomped her way to the entrance into the house. Entering and slamming that door she hurried down the hallway where she tossed her purse on the table in the foyer then began pacing back and forth in front of the front door. “So help me… if she’s gotten into trouble I’m not getting her out of it,” she said fuming with frustrated anger.

Just then the rumbling sound of a motorcycle engine grabbed her attention and rushing to the door she opened it to see the Indian followed by another motorcycle, a police one, pull into the driveway. Taking a deep breath the doctor walked out onto the front porch and waited as Sam turned her bike off then dismounted then tugged the helmet from her head. Forgetting about the police officer Janet rushed down the steps and was standing nose to nose with her younger partner before she realized it. “Would you care to explain to me what in the hell you were doing?” she growled out.

Before Sam could answer the officer walked up and spoke, ”Now, Dr. Frasier, she’s explained everything to me and I thought it best just to bring her home instead of taking her in once she told me where she was staying.”

Janet stepped back and gave the man a strange look. “Just what exactly did she tell you, Will?” she asked recognizing him now.

“I told him Aunt Sam was supposed to take me to get my license today but she had to go to Washington on urgent business and that I just wanted to get some practice in before you took me tomorrow. I didn’t think it would hurt since it was so late and there wasn’t any traffic on the roads,” the blonde teenager said in a rush of words then waited to see Janet’s reaction.

Janet crossed her arms and glared at the young woman but before she could say anything Will added, “I can remember what it was like the first time I rode my Dad’s Harley, Doc. She wasn’t breaking any laws when I stopped her, I just recognized the bike and not the rider; thought someone had stolen Sam’s ride.”

Sighing Janet’s eyes narrowed as she watched Sam’s reaction. The shaggy blonde haired teen was trying hard not to look smug but she was failing miserably, lucky for her Will couldn’t see her face. “Thank you, Will. We’ll take care of this when Sam gets home,” the doctor finally said.

“I’m sure you will, Dr. Fraiser,“ the tall policeman said and then placed a hand on Sam’s shoulder adding, “the next time I see you on that bike you’d better have a license, Sammy.”

Janet’s eyes widened and she coughed. Sam moved to pat her on the back and replied to the officer, “Oh, I will, Sir. Do you need some water, Aunt Jan?” she asked the coughing doctor.

“I’m fine…Sammy,” the doctor replied emphasizing the name and gave Will a small smile. “Thank you again, Will,“ she continued by pointing at Sam, “You put the bike back where you found it right now missy and then to bed with you.”

Hanging her head Sam nodded and moved to push the Indian into the garage. Will told the doctor goodnight and returned to his motorcycle, starting it up he backed out of the drive leaving Janet standing there, her arms still crossed. At the sound of the garage closing she turned to walk back up the steps and into the house. After locking the front door and turning off the porch light she moved to sit on the couch waiting for Sam to appear.

Before long that wait was rewarded by the appearance of slim hands grasping her shoulders and she tried to pull away as they began to massage her tense muscles. “That is not going to work, Samantha. What were you thinking?” The doctor asked but didn’t allow Sam to answer as she continued the questions. “What if it hadn’t been Will? What you have done then and what made you use your own name?”

Sam leaned over until her lips were next to the doctor’s ear and said, “I’m sorry, sweetie. I wasn’t thinking when I took off at the red light. I admit that, but I just wanted to take a spin around the block before I parked the bike and I thought telling him I was named after my brilliant Aunt was a great idea, saves any confusion if we have to go out in public anywhere while I’m like this.”

Janet shrugged out from under Sam’s hands and rose from the couch. She turned to face the blonde teenager and spoke, ”You promised to follow me home, Sam. Do you realize how much seeing you speed away on that huge bike when you’re like this,” she waved a hand at Sam’s form and continued, “frightened me? On top of the actual fact that I have no clue how to bring you back to your normal self….if it’s even possible to do that!”

The doctor’s voice had risen in intensity as she vented her frustration at the actions of her partner and all Sam could do was stand there and listen. She knew anything she tried to say when Janet was like this would only make it worse. With a resigned shake of her head she turned away from the angry doctor and began walking down the hallway.

“Where are you going? I’m not finished yet,” Janet called after her retreating partner.

Sam answered in a loud voice, “I’m sleeping in the office, think of it as grounding myself.”

“But we need to…” the doctor began to say but the slamming of the office door stopped her. Janet stared at the hallway in stunned silence and then flopped down on the couch to cradle her head in her hands. A few minutes later she raised her head and wiped the tears from her eyes. Standing up she walked to the hallway but instead of venturing down it to the office and her partner she made her way upstairs to their bedroom. As she climbed the stairs all she could think was hopefully Vala and the rest of the team could find something to fix this…before it caused a rift between her and Sam.

**

Thousands of light years away on the planet where all of this began the team exited the Stargate. Shouldering several bags of new equipment meant to test for energy readings, no matter how faint, they made their way towards the ruined complex.

Vala hurried ahead of the others, taking the point position. She had put quite a bit of distance between herself and the men when her radio squawked, “Vala!” Mitchell’s voice said over the connection.

She paused long enough to click her radio on and answered, “What?”

“You want to slow down some. The complex isn’t going anywhere,” Mitchell remarked.

“No, if you can’t keep up with me I’ll just wait on you at the entrance,” she replied and increased her pace.

Cam started to order her to stop but Daniel waved a hand at him. “You might as well forget it, Cameron. She’s not going to listen to you,” the archeologist told him.

“Her running herself into the ground isn’t going to find a way to fix Sam any faster, Daniel,” commented the Lt Colonel.

Daniel shrugged his shoulders and kept walking. “She’s worried,” he said.

“Like we all aren’t,” Cam replied as he walked faster to catch up with Daniel.

The two men caught up with Teal’c who overhearing the conversation added his own words, “Vala Mal Doran cares deeply for both Janet Fraiser and Samantha Carter; I believe she promised to fix what she thinks was her fault, Colonel Mitchell.”

“Hell, big guy, we all want to fix this but her tearing off on her own won’t make it happen any faster,” replied Cam.

“Since she is failing to slow her pace I suggest we increase ours,” the Jaffa stated and moved ahead to catch up with the woman.

Cam threw up his hands in defeat and adjusting his backpack grumbled, “Well, come on Jackson before she goes and breaks something trying to find a cure.”

The two men increased their pace until they caught up with Teal’c and soon the three of them together closed the distance between Vala and themselves. Catching up with the heavily breathing woman first, Teal’c grabbed the back of her pack halting Vala in her tracks. “Hey!” she exclaimed waving her arms to keep her balance.

“I suggest you slow your pace or you will be in no condition to search the complex when we reach it,” Teal’c calmly told her.

Vala glared at him as she wiped the sweat from her eyes. “I promised Janet I’d find a way to reverse what that beam did to Sam,” she told him.

“I am aware of this but would it not be prudent to be well rested and clear headed during your search?” the Jaffa asked.

Letting a huff of breath explode from her mouth Vala rolled her eyes and then her shoulders slumped in defeat. “You have a valid point there, Muscles. Okay, I’ll slow down but not that slow…we need to make it to the complex before nightfall,” she told him.

Teal’c inclined his head in a slight nod and loosed his grip on her backpack allowing Vala to walk away again but at a slower pace than before. He watched her move away from them again then followed with Daniel and Cam not far behind. The team still had a few more miles before they reached the complex and began the search for a solution to their team mate’s little problem.
