AN2: thanks to sams_ceara for the beta and on a side note Vala and I had a chat...we decided to let Sam and Janet have this ficlet to themselves.

After a quick shower and change of clothes, followed by a long meeting with the General to explain exactly what occurred during her abrupt journey to the other universe and a little impromptu meeting between the team to discover what they did during her absence, Sam was ready to head home…her home. Watching the guys walk out, Sam smiled and then it grew bigger as Vala turned around, running back to give her a hug.

“We really missed you, Samantha,” the dark-haired woman said with a tight squeeze as she laid her head on the blonde’s shoulder.

“I missed you guys, too,” the blonde told her. Vala began to leave the room and Sam stopped her with a question, “Where’s Janet? I thought for sure she’d be here with the lot of you holding Sam watch over the lab.”

Vala stood up straight and began fidgeting slightly, “Well, she was here…in fact, she hardly left the observation booth except for medical emergencies. I had to bring her food to eat because she refused to leave, that was until the General stepped in yesterday and ordered her home,” she told Sam.

“I can understand that, but why are you fidgeting?” Sam asked as she watched Vala bite her lower lip.

“Well, she wouldn’t leave…so I had Beth mickey her today and we carried her home, Beth stayed to keep an eye on her. I had just returned to the base when you appeared, so I haven’t had the chance to call Beth and let her know,” explained Vala in a rush.

“Mickey? You mean you slipped her a mickey?” Sam asked, her brow furrowed at the thought of Janet having to be sedated because of her absence.

Vala’s face lit up, “Yes, that’s what I meant…it was the only thing I could think of to get her to go home and rest. Was I wrong to do it?”

“No, not at all; I mean she’s done it to me enough times, about time somebody used it to get her to rest. I’d better get home, though; it will be a pleasant surprise for her to wake up and I’m there,” Sam told her.

“Yes, you hurry home. I’m going to stay on base…give the two of you a chance to re-connect,” Vala said with a little grin.

Sam pulled her close and gave her a tight hug, followed by a soft kiss on the lips, “Thank you. Give us a couple of days and I’ll come pick you up, the three of us will do something to celebrate my homecoming then,” Sam told her.

“Sounds like a plan…call me,” with that said, Vala returned the kiss and turned to skip out of the lab, just before she disappeared she turned back to say, “I’m bidding on a timeshare on Ebay, I’ll let you know if I win.”

Sam began to call after the woman but stopped, shaking her head she muttered, “ I don’t even want to know what that’s all about.”

‘It’s time for me to go home and make somebody feel a whole lot better,’ she thought grabbing her jacket and keys from the counter then walking quickly out of her lab.

The hour was late when she pulled into the driveway of the home shared with the small doctor and Sam let out a sigh of relief, “Home…my home,” she whispered, wiping a tear from her eye as she took a deep breath and opened the car door.

She walked up the path, pausing to take in the well manicured flowerbeds, the swing on the front porch swaying slightly from the small breeze; little things she thought she’d never see again. Resuming her motion, she ventured up the steps and taking her keys, opened the front door.

Upon entering, the smell of the house hit her; it was one she’d grown accustomed to over the years, a mixture of fragrant candles along with fresh flowers. Janet always had fresh cut flowers positioned around the house in various vases; in the spring they came from her own flowerbeds and in winter she’d buy them from the local florist. Inhaling deeply, Sam smiled and took her jacket off, hanging it on the coat rack near the front door. Moving into the living room she found Beth, Janet’s long time friend and head nurse, stretched out on the couch; a book lay on her chest as she snored quietly. Sam quietly walked over and, bending down, shook the woman’s shoulder until she roused.

“Huh? Wha…” Beth startled awake. “Colonel Carter!” she exclaimed.

“Shhh…hey there, is your patient still sedated?” Sam asked with a slight grin.

“No, but she is sleeping, the sedative should have worn off by now,“ Beth said sitting up and then with a slight blush told Sam, “we only sedated her to get her home.”

“I’m sure she’ll forgive you, Beth,” Sam told her, “Why don’t you take off? I’m home now.”

“And I’m sure she’ll be ecstatic to see you, Colonel. Welcome home,” replied the nurse.

Sam helped the nurse gather her things and showed her to the door. Then with a little wave as Beth entered her car, she closed the front door, locking it and turning out the downstairs lights. With a little bounce in her step she made her way upstairs and down the hall to their bedroom. Entering she found a small reading lamp on next to the bed illuminating Janet’s form curled around her pillow.

Smiling at her sleeping partner, Sam quietly changed clothes and then maneuvered her pillow out from Janet’s grasp, replacing it with her longer frame. The doctor mumbled something and gripped Sam tighter as she settled against her, head cushioned on the blonde’s shoulder, an arm holding her across the waist and one short leg thrown over her longer ones.

“Yup…I’m home,“ Sam murmured as she let her body relax and listened to the soft breaths coming from the body snuggled against hers. With a happy sigh, she closed her eyes and soon joined the doctor in sleep.

Sam awoke sometime in the night; Janet’s grip on her midsection had grown tighter, making it hard to breathe. Bringing a hand up Sam shook the smaller woman’s body, “Jan…Janet, sweetie, I can’t breathe,” she said softly without opening her eyes.

She felt the grip relax then the next thing she knew light kisses peppered her face and neck. Opening her eyes she found Janet had risen up on one elbow staring at her. “Are you really here or am I dreaming?” the doctor asked in a hushed tone.

Sam smiled. “Can a dream do this?” she asked as she pulled Janet down until she could place a kiss on her lips.

The kiss deepened as Janet truly realized she wasn’t dreaming. After a few minutes of slow exploration, she broke the kiss and spoke a little breathlessly, “Sit up…let me check you over.”

Chuckling softly, Sam did as asked, letting the doctor pull the t-shirt and boxers off until the blonde now lay nude in their bed. Janet slowly worked her way over every inch of her taller partner’s body, making sure everything was in order and Sam just let her do it, knowing full well the doctor wouldn’t be satisfied until she knew everything was okay.

“I’m fine, Janet…really,” Sam said, giggling as Janet’s hands skimmed over her ribs.

“I just had to make sure, you’ve been gone for two weeks, Sam…I need to know you’re alright,” Janet said, her voice shaking as she continued her exploration.

Hearing the tone of the doctor’s voice Sam stopped her and pulled the smaller woman to rest on top of her, “Hey…it’s okay, I’m home now. Let it out before you burst, hun,” she said softly stroking Janet’s cheek.

Janet gazed into her partner’s blue eyes and the flood gates opened as tears sprang into her own brown eyes then trailed down her cheeks where Sam wiped them away with her fingers, “I didn’t know what to think when we couldn’t contact you,” she choked out, “for all I knew you were hurt but out of phase and I couldn’t get to you.”

“It was a freak mishap, sweetheart, “ Sam said in a soft tone as she cushioned Janet’s head on her chest, “one that will probably never happen again since my counterpart met her end during it.”

“Explain please,” sniffled Janet as she tried to stop her tears.

Sam went on to explain what happened to cause her disappearance, all about using the shield to save the alternate Earth from the Ori and the state of that world’s political affairs. With a little chuckle she told Janet about her being married at one time to the other world’s Rodney.

This made Janet sit up slightly, “Are you serious?” she asked.

“Oh yeah but we didn’t stay married for long. When I asked him why he told me I’d left him for someone else,” Sam told her.

Rolling off of Sam the doctor sat up in the bed, “Okay, who did you leave him for?”

Leaning up on her elbows Sam gave the doctor a crooked grin, “You of course, silly,” she said, “when I asked him what happened he muttered something about a proposal he couldn’t refuse and wouldn’t tell me anything else.”

“Did you meet her?” the doctor asked, growing curious about her alternate self.

Sam’s face clouded over. “Yes, I had to tell her about the other me dying. It was something I wish you never have to experience, Janet. I’m sorry about all of this,” she replied in a soft voice.

Janet moved back to lie next to Sam, she snuggled up close to her partner and said, “But I didn’t and I have you home…in our bed…with me,” she whispered.

“And it’s all I thought about while I was trying to figure out a way back …you…worrying about me,” Sam replied, pulling Janet closer to her; “Now…someone told me you haven’t slept very well, I think we need to remedy that; we’ll have time for other things later.”

“I’m holding you to that, Samantha,” Janet said, trying to stop a yawn; she was still feeling the effects of the sedative Beth and Vala had tricked her into taking.

“Yes, ma’am, now…sleep,” Sam told her and with a yawn of her own, placed a kiss on the doctor’s temple and then pulled the covers over the two of them. Their breathing evened out as the two partners slowly slipped into sleep, wrapped in each other’s arms.
