There was a stabbing pain as she was moved from the cot…the hazy memory of teary blue eyes as her hand was held tightly and a voice spoke in soft tones…then the warmth from bright sunlight followed by bone numbing cold as she passed through the gate…the last thing she remembered before fully slipping into unconsciousness was a determined voice whispering in her ear…”Hang in there for me sweetie; you‘ve made it this far, don’t give up now… I’ll have you fixed in no time.”

Groggy blue eyes slowly blinked open, squeezing them tightly a few times she opened them finding the room in full focus now. The soft beeping of the machinery monitoring her was the only noise in the room or so she thought until a soft snore sounded from her right. Sam turned her head to see Janet sitting in a chair between the two beds, her head propped up on an elbow as she dozed. Another snore sounded and the blonde smiled, lying on the bed behind Janet’s chair with a hand resting on the doctor’s shoulder was Vala, the source of the snoring.

Sam cleared her throat and Janet’s eyes popped open then she moved Vala’s hand as she rose from the chair to stand beside the bed, “Hey you…nice to see you awake,” the doctor said softly as she checked over the monitoring equipment. Satisfied with the readings she let the doctor side of her slip back and the worried partner came forward as she leaned over and placed a soft kiss on Sam’s lips, “You had me worried for a while there sweetheart; how are you feeling?”

Wincing slightly as she shifted in the bed Sam gave her partner a crooked smile and spoke in a scratchy voice, “Sore…and I’m sorry.” The doctor picked up a nearby cup, holding it while the blonde sipped some water then continued, “I wasn‘t paying attention and was caught with my back turned, before I could turn all the way around an Ori soldier shot me.”

“Well, you were lucky he shot while you were turning…it could have severed your spine but took out a kidney instead. Vasir wanted me to remind you…he now has two favors you owe him for,” the doctor told her with a small smile.

Sam groaned, “Aww man…you had to clone me a new one didn’t you?”

The doctor nodded, “Yes, I did…Cam did a good job of controlling the bleeding but I’m afraid the shot took off a section of the organ. I could have taken it out and left you with the one but with your luck I thought a new one was a good idea.”

Janet began to say something else but a snore interrupted her and she glanced over at the other bed smiling at the sleeping woman. Sam turned her head, following Janet’s gaze, “Has she been here the whole time?”

“Of course…she had a death grip on your hand when they brought you through the gate. I threatened to sedate her before I took you into surgery when she wouldn’t stop babbling about not watching your butt and she finally calmed down some,” Janet told her.

Sam smiled, “She’s still worried about Daniel; has there been any news of him while we were gone?”

Janet shook her head, “No, none yet but there are still teams out looking. Now can we get back to the subject of you?”

Sam blushed and nodded, “I said I was sorry and I did make it home to you.”

With a sigh Janet pulled the chair over with her foot and sat down, holding Sam’s right hand in her own she spoke, “I know…” she began, “but it was a hostile situation and you should have been paying attention….”

Sam interrupted her, “I had to get the shield working again Janet, without it the Pryor would have wiped out the village. As it was I failed and it was Cam who got it up and running; how…I have no clue, I was kind of delirious from pain and morphine.”

The doctor gave a small laugh, “Sam even doped to the gills you managed to come up with a way for him to make it work. So it was really you who saved the day from what he told everyone.”

“Well I wish I could remember doing it so I’ll just take your word for it honey,” Sam said with a grin and then yawned.

“You need your rest but this conversation is far from finished Samantha, we need to talk more…” before Janet could finish a loud snore interrupted the doctor and Sam took the opportunity to throw one of the pillows tucked under her head at Vala, hitting her in the face.

With a wink to her partner Sam spoke in a loud voice, “Hey! You don’t snore that loud at home… there are sick people who need their rest in here.”

With a grumbled snort Vala pulled the pillow away, raising her head she gave the couple an odd look, “I’ll have you know I had a trying experience of my own on that planet not to mention worrying over you when I found out you were injured, it tuckered me out.”

The dark-haired woman sat up in the bed, stretching her arms over her head and twisting her upper body towards Sam’s bed, she gave the pair another small smile, “It’s nice to see you awake and coherent for a change.”

“I was severely injured for crying out loud,” groaned Sam closing her eyes and letting her head flop back on her remaining pillow.

Vala rose from the bed and moved to stand next to the chair, “I know that…see what happens when I’m not around to watch that pretty behind of yours,” she remarked with a grin.

Sam opened her eyes at the remark and saw her dark-haired lover’s swollen lip, reaching a hand up she ran a finger over the flesh, ”What happened to you?”

“It’s nothing…Tobin disagreed with my explanation of the truth behind his god,” Vala replied her face clouding over, “I have a feeling he’ll be punished for his attempt to stop the Pryor from firing upon the village but maybe not,” she added with a small shrug.

“How did you get away from him?” Sam asked.

“I guess he still feels something for me, he helped me escape…I don’t know what happened to him after I ringed down to the planet,” Vala told her.

“Maybe he’ll plant a seed of doubt in some of the others…but other than the swollen lip you‘re fine though right?” Sam asked, eyeing Janet who nodded.

“Yes, I’ve already been checked over by our good doctor here,” Vala told the blonde as she saw the look passed between her two lovers, “I’m fine but you on the other hand gave both of us quite a scare.”

“Just another day at the office,” joked Sam as she tried to stop a yawn.

“Okay enough talking…you get some sleep sweetie and I’ll be back to check on you later and you,” she said nudging Vala as she rose from the chair, “either go home or to your quarters to sleep so she can rest,” she told their lover as she moved to gather medication for Sam.

“Yes, ma’am,” Vala replied and leaned over giving Sam a light kiss goodbye then gave one to the doctor also as she slipped past her, “I’ll be in my quarters…come get me before you go home or join me if you want to,” she told Janet and with a wave to the couple walked away from the bed then out of the infirmary.

“You should go with her, she‘s worried about what Adria may have done to Daniel; I think she needs someone to be with her right now and you need to get some rest,” Sam told her partner as she tried to fight off the new dose of painkiller the doctor added into the IV, “that’s cheating…sneaky woman.”

“If it helps you sleep and heal then I’ll keep doing it…now rest, don’t worry about me,” Janet told her as she pulled the blanket up, tucking it around Sam’s body, “I’ll get some rest soon.”

“Uh huh…I’ll believe you when I …” Sam’s voice trailed off as the medication kicked in leaving Janet to stand beside the bed gazing down at the sleeping form of her partner.

‘We are definitely having a talk soon Samantha…I can’t keep patching you up only to have to do it all over again, it’s taking its toll on me and you,’ the doctor thought as she sighed heavily and turned to walk away from the bed.
