The last month has been rather politically active in Finland, due to presidential elections. Tarja Halonen's last term ends next month. The president-elect is now Sauli Niinistö, a former finance minister of the 1990's who lost to Halonen six years ago. The day of the parliamentary election begun with -3 degrees Celsius and sunshine. It ended with the fall of wet snow.

Actually, these were centennial elections, after one hundred years of Finnish parliamentary elections. Yes, we had the first election before the independence.

Last Sunday there was the second round of the Finnish presidential election. With only two candidates, there seemed to be more vigorous campaigning and lots of talk for political alliances.

Last Sunday was the day of the Finnish presidential election. I was (and will be in a couple of weeks' time) one of the members of the local district election committee.

Pre-voted today. The presidential election is at January 15th, but I'll be in the polling station as a vice-member of the local election committee and, at the end of the day, counting ballots.
