Alexandra Fuller - Scribbling the Cat
In
her previous book, Alexandra Fuller wrote about her childhood during the Rhodesian civil war in country that is now Zimbabwe. This time shell tells about her trip with an unstable veteran of that war, the man she only calls K.
K. was a white soldier during the war, fighting the African guerrillas for the white government of Rhodesia. And the war left its mark. After the war he found difficult to find his place in the civilian life and found religion and teetotalism.
In order to find some kind of answers Fuller - who was already married with children - took a trip to Zimbabwe with K., a violent and violently religious man who had fallen in love with her. They find his old comrades in arms and some secret places but no answers to speak of. Maybe they didn't even know the question…
This is a real story at least more based of the one than the average movie with the same claim. So it is not sentimental, more like grittily realistic.
