Oh. Em. Gee. Kansas, stop embarrassing me.
So, I found out in Prehistory of Art class that Kansas FAILS at preserving rock art.
In the past, people painted over petroglyphs (images carved into the rock) to make them more visible. Fair enough, it wasn't a great idea, but it was done out of curiosity and without malice. However, I do not understand what makes people think it is OK to use them as a shooting target! Seriously, What. The. Hell? Would they shoot bullets at the Mona Lisa? Sadly the answer is probably yes. Or is rock art different because it wasn't created by white people?
Secondly, people stop carving your name and/or your alma mater on/near rock art. I can't believe that I even have to say this! Geeze! Vandalize something without historical or archaeological value like Sam Brownback's house. I don't want to see "Wichita" carved over a barely visable petroglyph ever again!
So yeah, I'm going to get this out of my system now. People responsible, you are a bunch of culturally insensitive, immature, moronic philistines and you all need to go jump off a cliff.
