July continues to impress the pants off me. I'm looking down the road and thinking, bring it. what style you got?
I've seen something like six bluegrass shows over the span of not even three weeks, and all of them in great company.
what else? My neighbor, an incredibly sweet woman of 80 or so, brought me some very old tapes of her husband singing and playing guitar, after she heard me doing the same out on my porch one night last week. "he played country music," she told me. "do you like country?" to return the favor, I'm going to bring it all into protools, cut out the tape hiss, mix it a bit, and burn her a CD or two. I'll write more about that later on.
played some music with my buddy Trap two nights ago, earlier on in the evening. good times. we're getting more and more into a groove, in synch with each other. I've been more used to setting the pace in the past, in general, what with either a melody or some chords, but that night I encouraged him to take the lead with the rhythm, and for a change I followed him. we basically ended up just improvising the whole time, but with him saying afterwards, "man, man, please remember that. that was. . .what we were doing there, and. . .man." and us laughing and moving into another.
I drove through the swamp tonight, heading back into the city with the windows open and that deep earthy scent rolling around me and larry sparks singing on the stereo. I am loving that record. simple pleasures, man. for real. I feel like I've been grinning steadily for days at a time.
here it is. the night before last I hung out with my friend Amy, who I take it is in a similar place. "there's that cliche about 'things could not possibly get any worse,' but then of course they always do," she said to me, also grinning, and our friends drinking whiskey around us too, listening, "and I think that it ought to go the other way too, that we should be saying instead 'things could not possibly get any better,' and then they will."
yeah, and why not? in the spirit of that sentiment, lift your glasses and have a laugh with us. things could not possibly get any better. right?
