horns

traveled north to fredericksburg two nights ago to fill in on bass for my buddies' band. I'd never played with them before and some of the songs we played that night I hadn't even heard before, so I essentially improvised the entire show, which was great fucking fun. we were originally going to play second, but ended up getting to headline the show. we played a long set of some evil, snarling metal that you could tell grew up in the south, and I played so hard and so fast for so long that I rose up two bulbous blood blisters on my bass fingers, big ol throbbers, before we even finished the set. also got to catch some great local-to-fburg metal and a group that came down from chicago and who tore it the fuck up. we're definitely going to do it again -- I'm even breaking out the acoustic bass to do a full-on unplugged show with 'em at some point, maybe at the poshass club my girl works at.

their usual bassist is a good guy, a friend of theirs, but he lives in BFE and can't be bothered to show up for practices very often, or even gigs, apparently. I think if it was anyone else, they'd've kicked his ass to the curb, but b/c he's a friend it puts 'em in an awkward position. lots of talk re. "best for the band" and all, but only baby steps toward the follow-through, though. I've told 'em straight up, though, if they want a bassist, I'll step right the hell up and bring the thunder. I like playing with those cats -- and it'd been, way, way, way, waaaaaay too long since I was up on a stage playing metal.

also, I'd just like to say hello to all you other villains out there. I haven't been around as much these days, but if any of you were in town tonight, it'd go down like this: first heaps of soul food or indian food (which is still by rights soul food) and then bourbon and metal round at the pub.

lastly what's the point behind the apparently new "current location" field? I put something innit, and it doesn't show up anywhere.
