"some kind of jam box..."

I finally got a copy of that Frigg album I've been curious about for so long. And, I mean, objectively, it's good. But it's also pretty straight Nordic fare. The whole reason I was particularly interested in hearing the rekkid was for the use of traditional American folk instruments in traditional Scandinavian folk music. Dobro, guitar, and (I thought) banjo. The thing is, this is basically a fiddle album, though, like a lot of good Nordic albums are. Nothin' wrong with that. But no banjo at all, I don't think. The guitar is pretty incidental. And the dobro isn't used in all the songs, and when it's there, it's mixed pretty low. It's a nice sound and all, but it only hints at something that I thought was going to be the meat and potatoes of the album. Kinda let me down a little even if it's a perfectly good rekkid. Maybe they'll go more in that direction on future releases.

Speaking of Frigg, too, I just found out about a Nordic roots festival that's happening over four days in Minn., MN over Sept./Oct. Frigg's there, Hoven Droven is there (!), a few others of note are there. That would be a lot of fun to see.
