The Doctor had heard some stories.
Not the good sort of stories that make him happy and fuzzy and want to dance around with his companions, but the bad sort of stories that make him knit his brow and consider the state of the universe, and then get a bit fuzzy at the idea of saving it again.
There weren't any companions to dance around with, though, they'd been dropped off for a proper honeymoon on a planet named Elft, with the most beautiful and least dangerous whirlwinds in the universe. All quite romantic, really, if one were interested in romance.
The Doctor wasn't interested in romance, he was interested in the stories he was hearing, about a very sick planet with a very contagious disease that would spread soon and quickly if someone didn't do something about it.
Naturally, the Doctor was just the someone to do something about it. He stepped out of the TARDIS, parked conveniently behind a tree in a park in a very big city on the very sick planet, and he ran a few scans that, yes, he probably should have run before stepping out of the TARDIS. But River wasn't here to nag remind him, and, besides, he was immune to most things.
With a smug grin that River wasn't there to see, the Doctor stuck his sonic screwdriver back in his pocket and started walking towards the nearest hospital. No better place to start curing than one of those..
Usually.
At least there'd be a shop.
