Fallen ADAMS Officers Remembered

After the terrorist attacks on Thursday killed 6 and injured 80, memorial services for lost servicemen are to take place Wednesday.

Two ADAMS officers, including four civilians, were fatally wounded in the explosions on Thursday (0816).

Both servicemen, First Lieutenant Jeffrey Sakai, 42, and Officer Ashleen Eve, 25, were uncovered from the wreckage of The Three Bluebirds about two hours after the explosion and pronounced dead on site.

Sakai graduated from South Green College in xxxx with a degree in business management. He was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, said Antoine Dailey, who was also a member at the time. "[Sakai] always had on a huge grin, but was also really smart," he said. "He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met. Ever will meet.”

Sakai was president of the fraternity in his senior year and remained active after graduating, said Adil Dawud, a member who knew him for 18 years. Tom Gibbs, Alpha Sigma Phi's current president, said Sakai escorted students after dark as a campus community service officer.

"He was compassionate," Dawud said. "He really cared about honor, doing right. That’s how an officer should be.

Sakai is survived by his wife, who is a GFU colonel, and their 4-year-old daughter. Gibbs said the fraternity is now focusing on assisting Sakai's family.

"It’s sad that we had to lose such a great guy. It’s always the best of us," Gibbs said. "But at least they leave us something to fight for, to look up to.”

Memorial services will be held for Lieutenant Sakai and Officer Eve at the Central Square Wednesday, at 0600. A large crowd of servicemen is expected, as well the other officers who were injured in the explosion.
