we went to a jazz show yesterday! In this amazing ancient church. The show itself wasn't so great - the players were a little too timid, I thought - except, that is, for the drummer, who was right on the ball the whole time and blew everyone away with this amazing solo that had little to do with the rest of the performance, but was definately the hightlight. The piano player was good to, but kept holding himself back, i felt; during the song which the drummer concluded with her amazing solo, things were getting a little more bizzare and interesting, and he was playing a little more weirdly, but quietly, barely touching the keys, like he was nevous we'd actually hear him being expiramental. Once in the performance i swear he actually hit the wrong key, so there was this loud blunt DONK for just a second in the middle of all this delicate fingerwork, and for a second i was waiting for another one, like he'd work off it, but he just pretended it didn't happen until I wasn't sure i'd heard it. I didn't quite approve of this - my motto towards musicianship is often, WWSD ('what would shapero do') and i felt like shapero would have run with it. Also, the 'bugle-horn' player guy (i think thats what they called it but i'm not sure that's what it was - it was like some sort of bass trumpet) was a first a classical violinist, and, as éveline put it, "il joue du trumpet comme un violin." Then for one song he broke out the violin and played it like a trumpet. But all in all it was fun, and we ate fondue when we got home and i spoke lots of french and enjoyed myself thouroughly.
