when i was looking for camera's i wasnt really focused on the price.
i looked at the zoom, i have 22x, thats 10x optical zoom, and 2.2x digital

the reason for this is so i could take macro shots. macro shots being shit up real close (: and if thats your thing, then thats cool
the higher the mega pixels, the higher the resolution and the colour.

with my 6 megapixel camera, i can go down to kinkos and print out 21x20 (i believe) pictures, thats in inches, and itll still be clear.

another thing to consider is the amount of pictures youre going to be buying. i have a sony digital camcorder, with and 80mb memory card and that cost me 60+$. the 256mb picture card for my digital camera, the fuji. its pretty pricy. so part of your budget should go with the picture card since the ones that come with the camera are about 16 which lets you take only a few pictures.

pretty much, the higher the megapixels, the pricier it gets. i got my camera for cheaper (its usually 500 bucks), if youre looking for something compact, then that can cost you some too. however, the compact ones dont take the most detailed pictures and theyre usually on for the vacation-type people.

if youre into getting a fatty lense, like youre doing professional work, those can cost up to as much as a camera, if not, just stick with the one on it because its not worth the extra lense if youre not going to know what to do with it.

check the size of the LCD if you like it because if its too small, and youre not diggin the whole "stick your face into the camera" deal, then that might be another thing to consider.

my sony camcorder cost me about 1000 bucks, and i absolutely love it. ive been able to take stills and record movies. i invested in a digital camera because i found the stills on my camcorder to not be up to par with what i really wanted. maybe a digital camcorder is for you too (:, my digital camcorder has a pretty awesome zoom as well.

3) i wasnt kept on the price, and i like to keep my face close to the camera so the LCD didnt bother me too much.

im going to get another lense hopefully, but it works really well. (:
