Pink!

I'm curious to know what people think about pink and its cultural associations with femininity and girliness. Apologies for the crappy options with regard to gender. I did consider cis-female, cis-male, transwoman, transman, brought up female but don't identify as one gender, ditto male, and other, though I worried that I'd still be getting it ( Read more... )

See, my Mum never put me in that much pink as a child because she's a redhead and thusly clashed with pink, so she kind of projected that (and a hatred of green because her mother always dressed her in green) onto me.

Until my late teens I liked blue, then went towards purple, then moved onto pink as I neared 20. I'm 27 now and only just beginning to accept green and orange into my wardrobe, so pink clothes are diminishing or becoming more mature. Luckily for me, the only colour I don't really suit is yellow.

When I had my son I respectfully requested no clothes with things like 'monkey' or 'monster' on them until he had demonstrated his personality. As it is, monkey quite suits him now, but he prefers pretending to be a dinosaur than a monster! I have always searched for things that are 'different' for him - reds, greens, browns and oranges. He's like me and suits most colours. Unfortunately my partner's Mum loves 'blue for boys' and will get him enough blue to last the year.

My partner and I have agreed if we have any girls there will be NO mention of 'princess' in our household, as a nickname or on clothing or accessories. We feel it gives girls too much of an ego at a young age and a certain sense of entitlement which is not attractive in people. My parents never called me or my sister princesses, so I don't understand this new trend of doing so at all.
