i know! robert downey jr is such a fine actor. i would love to see his take on the role. though, given his height i wonder who they will get to play watson. in the books holmes is tall and lean.
rdj is anything but tall. having been up close and personal with the ironman suit he wore, he is about my height, which is 5'2".
the comicbooks sucketh. i bought them as they were being published. i tried to read them, being an uberfan as i said, but i just couldn't.
to date my favourite actor in the role is jeremy brett. especially in the first season before he gained weight from the meds he was taking.
Well, Downey wouldn't be the first actor to have to stand on a box to look taller.... *g*
But, yeah, What You Said. And as far as I'm concerned, Jeremy Brett played the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I've watched a lot of takes on the character (like you, I am a Holmes uberfan) some good, some not so good, and some downright awful. To me, and to many others, Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes.
i loved watching the BBC series when it was broadcast. i made VHS tapes so i could rewatch them. about six months ago i bought the DVD set and have enjoyed rewatching them yet again.
oddly, as much as i love holmes i try to only buy conan doyle books which are not sherlock holmes as they are so plentiful, and yes i do have one of the compilations. i am trying to collect all his other writings. i have a number of first editions.
though i do have a first edition hardback of the valley of fear which was not originally written as a holmes story, but was modified to add holmes in order to sell it... but then you already knew that!
I used to have quite a collection of Holmes-related material. When I moved West, I sold pretty much all of it except the Baring-Gould Annotated Sherlock Holmes, and a lovely pictorial tribute to Jeremy Brett as Holmes. Keep thinking I'll rebuild the collection, but many of those books were rare, and I haven't seen duplicates since. Of all the books I let go, those are the ones I truly regret selling, and wish I had kept.

*wistful sigh* Someday, I shall do that. Until then, I have books, DVDs, and the Holmes & Watson Sims I made for Sims 2.
