I'm starting a name meme, because I want to.

FIRST NAME: Austin
ORIGIN: Latin via French (Augustus, Augustine)
MEANING: Great ruler

Any reason your parents picked it?: I was named after the capital of Texas, where my parents are "from."
(Both of my parents moved around as often as I have, but my paternal line considers Texas its ancestral home)

MIDDLE NAME: Robert
MEANING: "Bright fame"
ORIGIN: Old German by way of long English tradition
REASON: Named after my father's best friend.

LAST NAME: Mullen
ORIGIN: Irish Gaelic
ORIGINAL FORM: O'Maolain (psst: For those of you with Chinese characters, please include original character, pronunciation and meaning)
Meaning:"Of a bald man"
Other salient facts:

Two alternative crests:

The one on the left is generally accepted by my family as the correct one: Écu XIVe Siécle, fond blanc; trois croissants rouges au canton dextre du chef, au canton sénestre du chef, nombril point; main dextre et rouge holding dagger. (That's the technical explanation. It's a 14th century shield with a white field and three red crescents in the top left, top right, and bottom, with a red hand holding a dagger. It's easy enough if you read Old French.)

Also, my family are related to (O') Mullans, Mullins, Mullin, etc. but NOT MacMullen, which is another surname entirely.
We are descended of the King of Connaught, widely considered to be either the first or second most prolific sire in history (his running mate is Genghis Khan). My family specifically appeared in Texas in the early 20th century, and we have no records or stories of my ancestor John's life before he came to America. (Oh, trust me, I've looked, but let me tell you: Mullen (and its variants) are the sixth most common name in Ireland, and "John Mullen" is not a helpful Google string.)

IF YOU HAD TO PICK YOUR OWN NAME, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
It depends. If I were still the same person (same culture, lineage, etc), I might be a James or a Noel (that's "Nole", not Noël- I'd say Caoimhin but I'd be murdered), but if I were French, I'd like to be Lucien or Dominic, and if I were Japanese I might be a Satoru ( 悟/Enlightenment). If I were (more) hispanic, I might consider being a Raúl or a Gabriel, and if I were Russian I would almost definitely be (and I may name a child this) Aleksandr, Sasha to my friends (What, you didn't know that Sasha is a boy's name? And the short form of Alexander to boot?)

FINAL THOUGHTS ABOUT YOUR NAME
It's okay. There are exactly six letters in all three of them, and they've got pretty good ratios of vowel to consonant. I haven't yet come up with a name that's more "me," so I plan to keep it for a while.

meme, name
