Sophie walked out of the kitchen, holding two cups of tea in her hands, moving slowly so that she wouldn’t spill the boiling liquid over her hands. Her legs carried her through the apartments living room, past the sofa, and through the hallway leading to her bedroom.
She moved quietly, her pajama bottoms swishing around her legs, and reached the doorway to her bedroom. She was about to move through the doorframe, when she stopped and leant against it, taking in the sight before her.
Sian was awake, resting on one elbow, leaning over a little bundle that was lying next to her, her blonde hair falling around her face, shielding it from Sophie’s view.
Sian reached up a hand and pushed stray strands of hair behind her ear, and Sophie felt her heart quicken as she saw the look in Sian’s eyes, and the emotions written all over her face.
Sian looked in wonder at the tiny human lying next to her, wrapped up in a bundle, with his tiny hands poking out, his face a picture of peace, still lost in sleep. Sian moved her hand slowly up to his face, still leaning on her other elbow, and gently stroked the tufts of brown hair that were poking out from underneath all the cloth he was wrapped in. She gazed at his face, slowly moving her fingers from his hair down, tracing his face, brushing over his eyebrows, trailing up the bridge of his tiny nose, running her fingers over his beautiful lips, still astonished at how small and gorgeous her three month old son was. She knew that if he opened his eyes, she would see a startling blue, so much like Sophie’s eyes that she would often get tears in her eyes from happiness at how perfect their son was.
She stopped moving her fingers over his face, and let her arm lie gently over him, her eyes taking his features in for the millionth time, gazing down into his face in awe that he was hers, he was Sophie’s, he was theirs.
Sophie stood watching her wife and son until she lost count of how many minutes she had been leaning against the doorframe. She knew that she would never get tired of seeing Sian with their son, and it made her fall in love with her over and over again when she saw moments like this. Sophie reluctantly pushed herself upright, not wanting to disturb the moment in front of her, wishing she could look at it forever.
She walked slowly forward, wanting to let the moment linger as long as possible, until Sian realised she was there, and looked up, her face so full of happiness and love, an unconscious smile on her lips, that Sophie felt her heart swell and quicken.
Sophie placed the cups of tea silently on the bedside table and softly sat down on the edge of the bed, lying one arm over Sian’s duvet covered hips, and reaching the other upwards to imitate Sian’s earlier movements, slowly running her fingers over her sons cheek. She felt Sian’s eyes on her, and looked into the blue pools, bringing up her other arm to brush blonde hair away from Sian’s face, her fingers slowly stroking over her forehead. Sian closed her eyes, feeling Sophie’s fingers brush over her cheek, leaving tingles where they had been, breathing in the scent of the two people she loved most in the world, that she would do anything for.
She opened her eyes to see Sophie looking back at her, her hand still holding her face. They gazed at each other, looking into each others eyes, seeing their own emotions reflected, and Sophie leaned forward slowly, not breaking eye contact, finally closing her eyes when their lips touched gently. Sophie lingered for a short while, then moved her head back slightly, opening her eyes and smiling lightly. Sian returned the smile, then looked away, back down at their son, as Sophie moved around behind Sian, shifting under the duvet, putting one arm over Sian, and resting her head on Sian’s shoulder, moving her body close to her, feeling her warmth seep through her, feeling goosebumps wherever their skin touched. She looked over Sian’s shoulder, breathing her in, down at their son, still peacefully sleeping, his face relaxed. Sophie placed a soft kiss on Sian’s shoulder, pulling her impossibly closer, and whispered ‘I love you.’
