Ooh. It's hard to get to the comments box without reading the answers! But I managed it. I reckon total cost was..... ummmmm...... $5. Two most expensive items would be the sponge and, let's see.... the low fat milk? What else was it. Same price as in the U.S. - hmmm. That's tricky. Low fat milk? And most inflated: the sponge. How did I do?
Not bad at all!elephantkittyApril 17 2008, 09:30:04 UTC
Actually, we kind of fudged a bit. The lowfat milks *is* more expensive than the regular milk (by Rs. 5). The sponge is Rs. 27, so slightly more expensive than the candles (@ Rs. 25 ea), but the candles are inflated due to the high demand.
Amber says that if we were Pakistanis, we could probably haggle and get all for $5, although the milk and butter are fixed-price. It's only the veggies you can haggle on.
I would have guessed Rs300 or so. I haven't been in Pakistan since 2000, but I'm kind of shocked at the price of dairy. Seriously, Rs47 for a litre? I mean, I know the exchange rate has fluctuated alot so my instinct might be off but still. wow.
yeah.. actually when d. brought it home and had me guess, i guessed it all would have cost less too -- though we don't really bargain with our sabzi wala and end up paying a pretty penny extra than locals i think.
re: milk -- well, that's for the boxed stuff. you can get it delivered by the dudh walla for 36-40, but it's often watered down or bacteria-laden. a recent DAWN report said like 1/3-1/4 of milk from the markets (fresh) tested had way too high levels of harmful bacteria to be safe. yeah, there's LOTS of complaints about prices of food commodoties here cuz they've gone up disproportionately compared to inflation... i don't understand all the reasons why.
i actually prefer the fresh milk, boiled... but the couple of places we tried it from had a funny (bad) taste, even after boiled. in india we had boiled, fresh milk... but here i just couldn't find a good provider, so we go with boxed.
