I'm Back, Baby! - Futurama: Bender's Big Score

Nov 27, 2007 23:13

Once again, Fox realizes the error of its ways and ponies up the money to continue on a tv show. The first of the four direct to dvd movies was released today and we've got it.

First impressions:

1. They really tried to shoehorn in about every damn character from the show's original run. It was sometimes distracting.

2. It was sometimes really obvious that this is going to be chopped up into episodes. The beginning was particularly stilted.

3. I liked the way they dealt with the Fry and Leela relationship. It would have been nice had they factored in the way their relationship was going after "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings", but the show factors in the two year break between the end of the show and movie. The relationship would obviously be in a different place than it was at the end of the show. The implications of another relationship (to ramble about it would lead to more plot-breaking spoilers than I want to give out) are very positive for the two of them.

4. The main bad guys - really gross but completely in line with other Futurama antagonists. I did appreciate the means by which they get the one up on earth-dwellers. It's just goes to show how people will remain stupid in the same ways 1000 years from now. Stupid spam - stupid people believing it

5. The songs here aren't as strong as some of the ones from the show. The holiday characters' song was okay, but the elves X-mas song from season 3 was better.

6. Their explanation for the results of the 2000 Presidential Election: Brilliant! The boyfriend thought there was too much Al Gore in the movie. Au contraire: There wasn't enough! I always love him when he's on the show.

I'm being negative right now but the things I don't like about it are standing out most. I've watched all of Futurama a trillion time so what I wanted/expected is probably a bit off. And I certainly will buy the second movie once it comes out. I'll end up watching it a few more times before the week is out. By then, I'll be nothing but happy with it.

first impressions, futurama
